I too just bought a puppy! My vet said that you should feed it 3 times a day, just like you should eat. Make sure it is puppy food, others are too harsh for the puppy's system! Keep them on puppy food for at least a year! And let the puppy eat as much as he wants for 15 minutes, after 15 mins pick up food until next feeding! Good luck! Make sure you take the puppy outside like 20 mins afters feeding to go potty, also as soon as he wakes up take him out right away this will help with potty training. Our puppy is nine weeks old and asks to go outside already!

At one year old, I'd put down the food, and pick it up as soon as he takes a break from eating. Do this again in the evening. After that, only feed him the amount that he ate before the breaks. Dogs will go back to their bowls out of boredom. If you walk the dog promptly after he finishes, he will only eat what he needs and then go to the door for his walk. This is the best way to gauge what they really need, against what they think they want. You cannot go by a package direction, since malteses and shih tzus are not of uniform size. Both should be toys, but I've seen them up to 18 pounds. I'm assuming that you are meaning kibbles when you say biskies. Kibbles and canned food are fine if of good quality.

the dog biscuits should be fed as a treat. Bread is fattening so why not biscuits ? : )
1) A high quality protein and fat diet is a must to keep
that beautiful coat at its best.
A vegetable enzyme can be combined with the diet.
more here to read on what to feed/
2) is your Shih-Tzu overweight ? they can develope major health problems when they are.

You should have one constant diet, and 1.5 cups seems like a lot for a small dog. I have a 25 pound dog and we feed him less than that. But, if the dog is bigger, then it depends. We feed him dog food as well, not dog biscuits. Don't know how big a difference that makes.

http://www.healthypetnet.com/HealthyPetNet/PetSystem/dog/DogFeeding.aspx?realname=&Ath=True&hdr=&cat=3 This is a website that has charts for how much to feed a dog by their weight and ages. Your puppy - does he get long walks and enough exercise? Drink enough water? have all his shots up to date? Could be too much food? Usually a maltese is a pretty small dog> Try the site- its really good! Good luck! I LOVE DOGS!

I would say based on my 2 pitbulls you are feeding him too much. My pits (3 & 2 years old) are about 70lbs and they each get 1 cup of dry food twice a day. They do eat low fat food also to keep them trim.

A good rule of thumb to go by (some adjusting may be needed to get them to the weight they should be. Take your dogs weight and multiply by 2% (for lower energy dog) or 3% (for high energy dog). This is the amount in pounds that your dog should eat.
EX: You have a 30 lb dog with low energy (exercise)
30lb x .02= .6lbs/9.6oz

puppies dont need too much food. They just need something in breakfast like their cookies or balls, then at lunch something strong and then at night just a little. and very important dont leave the dog food the whole day because they get bored and they tend to eat an deat and tha is why they get so fat and die.

Well if you think he is gaining too much weight, you can switch him to an adult diet now. As soon as he gets "fixed" they can switch foods. Puppy food is really high in fat...to help then gain weight...after they are fixed their metabolism slows a little and makes it harder for them to work it off.
As for how much, I would read the packaging label to see what it reccomends. Good Luck

That is WAY too much. Try feeding your dog dog food. That's what dog food was made for, for dogs to eat it!! And ask your vet for foods that he/she recommends, and get your doggie on a DIET!!
