Is less than perfect code for "fired from every job", "had several jobs lasting less than a few months each", or "quit every job without notice"? It's hard to give advice with so little to go on.
Honestly, unless you are looking for a corporate job, most employers do little if any reference checking. They are more concerned with your drug test and criminal background than they are with your past jobs. Unfortunately, most employers are just looking for a warm body.....a good worker is just a bonus.
The best way to repair your employment history is to start small. Find local employment at a small company, work hard, and rebuild your rep. Be honest about past mistakes and your desire to start fresh. Everyone deserves a second chance, and there are alot of companies willing to provide it.

Try dish washing at a restaurant or any eating place. You could work your way up from there. Some employers do want to change people's lives. You may find the one willing to help you. The important is whether you want to change that background.
