It is very high quality (very mild but still rich tasting) and it's only grown in the hills of the Kona coast of the Big Island in Hawaii. There are other high-priced brands of coffee--Kona is one of many premium coffees. In the years when the coffee crop doesn't do well, the price is even higher (up to $35-4- a pound). There are coffee plantations on other islands (Maui and Kauai) and they are also pretty good, but they cannot use the name Kona Coffee--only coffee grown in the Kona region can use the name. Try other Hawaii coffees!

seems that anything from Hawaii is over the top expensive. But seriously Kona coffee beans aren't that great. Italian espresso beans are far better quality tasting. But that is just my own personal preference - I have tried so many brands! I am a self-proclaimed espresso and yarn addict!

A lot is simply supply and demand. More people want it than can be supplied with it. Same reason for a lot of cost factors in other items on the market, items that have competitor product that is.
Gas on the other hand is artificially inflated by producers limiting the supply. The coffee issue is economics, the gas issue is Theft.
