Hatred is human, unfortunately. Someone who hates, though, -cares-. There is a possibility that this person will change his or her mind.
To be indifferent is not to care at all. If the happiness or misery of your fellow human beings means -nothing- to you, so that you wouldn't cross a street to help a sick person, because you just don't care if he lives or dies, Shaw is saying that -that- is truly inhuman.
Just saw what crazybut had to say -- that may be better.

Love and Hate are polar, but equal opposites. Both possess the same amount of strength and emotion, whereas indifference is a complete separation from all emotion. When you become indifferent and apathetic, you basically discount the existence of the problem or person.
The greatest sin against man is to be apathetic to their existence - that's the essence of inhumanity.

Apathy is more dangerous than hatred. Example: there were concentration camps all over the place during WWII, and the locals ignored them, turned their heads and looked the other way, even though they knew what was going on there. So who's at fault? If enough people had said,"No, this is wrong", would all of those people have died? Walking on by, when someone is screaming for help....Does that make sense to you? Good luck with your homework! :)

Think of the homeless and hungry people.....People don't hate them but they are rather indifferent of their situation and yet they are fellow humans just like everyone of us.
