Poop, that's all I have to say. My husband and I also adopted a dog recently with the same problem. I think this happens more bcuz they are adjusting to their new environment. It takes patience and discipline. Our dog got used to our schedule and is almost 100% free of pooping all over the place.
Like they say every dog has their day, just do not give your dog back for something that can be corrected.

Wow - rubbing your dog's nose in their poop. What terrible advice you're getting here.
Hopefully you're aware that abusive, nonsensical punishments like that are useless. The link above to the crate training site is your best bet. Crate training is the kindest, clearest, and quickest way to teach any dog the right potty habits. Using rewards when your dog has made a successful choice will also help. By rewarding your dog right then, as soon as he's done, you are not babying your dog or treating him "like a human" - rather, you are using a system that the dog understands.
Never let your dog run around without supervision. Getting a crate will prevent you from having to grow eyes in the back of your head. Good luck!

Your dog is in a new environment. Has not made proper adjustments yet. You need to reassure your dog ..all is okay. Once a routine is developed for outside activities, such as pooping, you will spend less time with your carpets. NOTE: even Alaskan huskies stay outside.

take it outside on a regular basis - every couple of hours when you are home. If you have to leave during the day for work, definitely take it out first thing in the morning, after eating, before bed, etc. and praise it when it poops outside. Keep it in a crate during the day, it sounds mean, but it is a 'safe' place for it. If it is the place it sleeps, it won't poop in it and will not go until you take it outside.

House train him. Personally I wouldn't adopt a two year old dog that wasn't already house broken. Once you feed the dog wait about a half hour (depending on his size) and bring him outside. Then wait until he goes and reward him when he does go outside so that he understands that its a good thing.

First of all but your dog on a feeding schedule. feed him in morning before you go to work or feed in when you get home. 30min after you feed him, he will need to go to bathroom. Don't let him back in until he does his thing. After awhile he will learn this is what he needs to do. When he does his thing make sure you give him lots of love. It should only take about a week or so until he learns what the right thing to do. dont let him eat all day long that the big problem.

Apparently the dog doesn't know how to ask to go out. You will have to start from scratch and take it out every couple hours, after eating and before bed. If your not home during the day you have a problem.

perhaps that is the reason why the previous owner got rid of it .you should take your dog to a vet anyway to begin with for shots and examination for PARASITES like worms - there could be a connection . speak to the vet about your dogs refusal to go outside and relieve himself .
