First of all, I want to clear one thing up. One guy said that Metal Gear Solid 4 will be coming out on the Xbox 360 and that it wrong. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a PS3 Exclusive Only. Konami confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 4 will be a Sony exclusive for sure on October 31st.
Well, I haven't played any of the Final Fantasy games either because I'm not a RPG person, but I am a HUGE fan of the Metal Gear Solid games. The Metal Gear Solid games are not boring and they are not like Splinter Cell games in any way. Metal Gear Solid games are pretty long in length also, so they are always worth the money.
The Metal Gear Solid series of games are some of the best stealth/action games ever made. Also, the Metal Gear Solid series has a very deep storyline that is like no Splinter Cell game or even any game for that matter.
Most of the Splinter Cell games are about sneaking around in the dark, but Metal Gear Solid games are the direct opposite. Most of Metal Gear Solid 2 took place in buildings and inside of a huge oil tanker ship.
In Metal Gear Solid 3, 95 % of the whole game takes place in the jungle and forests. You have to hunt for your own food, heal all of your wounds, burns, and broken bones by using medicine and other medical supplies.
Every bird, goat, alligator, frog, mouse, mushroom, snake, fruit, spider, crab and any other animals or fruits in the game can all be eaten. Some foods may make you sick, and some foods will give you more stamina. And if you get food poisoning, you have to take a special medicine to cure yourself, and if you don't, your health will slowly deplete down.
You must eat food in Metal Gear Solid 3 in order to keep Snake (the main character) in good condition. For instance, if you are running low on stamina and need food, Snake wont be able to aim the gun steady and his hand will be shaking. When he gets hungry, his stomach will growl, and yes, you can hear his stomach when in growls in the game! Certain actions such as running, swimming and crawling will use up more stamina than other actions.
If you haven't played any of the Metal Gear Solid games, you NEED to buy Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 at least. If you buy Metal Gear Solid 4 without playing these games, you wont know what Metal Gear Solid 4 is about or anything because Metal Gear Solid 4 takes place several years after Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 takes place in the 60's, but the storyline in the 3rd game is very important to understanding the whole storyline as well. Also, the cutscenes in the Metal Gear Solid games are just amazing, and it's like watching a movie. Some cutscenes can last for 20 minutes and some for a little bit longer and shorter.
To the Playstation community, not playing any of the Metal Gear Solid games is like not playing any of the Halo games or Gears of War games. You simply have to get into the Metal Gear Solid games at least because if you don't you'll be missing out on probably the game of the year for Quarter 2 of 2008 for the PS3.

Despite the name, the major Final Fantasy games have no relation to one another. Final Fantasy X-2 is a direct sequel to Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy VII: Dirge Of Cerebus is a side-story/prequel to Final Fantasy VII.
The movie, Final Fantasy: Spirits Within is a completely original story and not related to any other Final Fantasy work.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children takes place a few years after the events in Final Fantasy VII. If you've never played FFVII, or at least read a summary of the story, this movie will make very little sense to you, but you got to admit, it looked pretty cool, no? ;-)
As games, the Final Fantasies present you with a compelling storyline, an interesting cast of characters, and a good battle system - which is essential since you're going to spend a lot of time in combat anyways. The Final Fantasy series is also marked by its grandiose, movie quality cut-scenes and music which help tell the story.
Metal Gear Solid borrows the cinematic cut-scene concept from the Final Fantasy games, but puts them into an action-shooter type game. Yes, at its core, MGS is basically a stealth/infiltration shooter, which I guess you could compare to Splinter Cell in some ways. Again, the big draw for the MGS series has been its story, and the gameplay.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is due out sometime in 2008 on the PS3 - possibly followed by a release on the 360 sometime later (nothing has been confirmed.) Final Fantasy 13 is supposedly due out in Japan around April of 2008, but may not come out until later in the year. An American release date has not been set, but will most likely not be until 2009.
Both series have been traditionally been very big sellers for the Playstation line - in fact, FFVII and Metal Gear Solid and FFX and MGS2 were 2 of the biggest selling titles on the Playstation 1 and Playstation 2 respectively. It remains to be seen if the next release of these series on the PS3 can help kickstart sales of the console in Japan and elsewhere.

Final Fantasy 13 will be released for the PS3 (2008), but its different than previous versions. The gameplay, weapons, and of course, the storyline is different (that changes in every FF game) at first it can be confusing, the first FF i played was FF8 and then my brother bought me FF9.. i couldnt understand why they didnt relate to each other. But if you are a RPG fan, you will love FF games. The major difference in the new games, is the new battle system. FF12 was ok, the plot was not as good as FF8 or FF10, but the new battle system is refreshing, no more random battles with that annoying change in scenarios!! lol ive seen the previews for FF13 and it looks good.
About the movies... FF: Spirits within was boring... and FF7: Advent Children was... odd... it was mostly about Cloud fighting those 3 guys, i didnt like it.
As for Metal Gear Solid, i played it once and didnt like it, so i cant give any advice about that.

Splinter Cell may seem boring to some people but its very fun for others. You just have to have patience, its so cool when you snap someone's neck while hanging upside down or pushing a guy off a cliff/building.I hated MGS because I was always trying to go through a level shooting everyone, but its a stealth game so I played it like one. Its so fun and has awesome boss battles. You may be a fps person. MGS4 for the PS3 looks different than other MGS game. Lots of stuff has been improved and added. The Final Fantasy games are confusing to me. You may not be an RPG guy so dont try getting one. Unless its like Mass Effect with shooting.
