A $200 ham radio is probably a handheld that works on one or maybe two of the higher frequency (VHF or UHF) bands with 5 to 7 Watts of transmit power, or perhaps a mobile radio (mounts in a car) with limited features that only works on the VHF 2-meter/144 MHz band. If a mobile, it will have 45-60 Watts of power. This radio will work OK around town, but can only talk directly to another station within about a 50 mile range if a mobile radio, or less than 5 miles if a handheld. These radios use FM modulation only.
A $3000 ham radio will work on all of the HF ham bands (1.8 through 30 MHz) and will probably include several of the VHF and UHF bands as well. Certain models are more compact in size and can be used in a car. Power output will be at least 100 Watts and may be 200 Watts. On the lower frequency (HF) bands, you will be able to talk to other ham operators anywhere in the world. They use all of the commonly available modulation modes.
