I applied for a great job and have had two interviews, had all my refrences checked, my college transcripts checked and now they just had me to take a drug test and sign for a criminal background check and said that the background check ussually takes 1 1/2 - 2 weeks and that they would be in touch.

Thats all they said, they never said I was hired or would be hired if everything comes out good they just said we'll be in touch.

What should I think of this, and is this a really good sign that they will probably hire me and just want to make sure everything is good before making a offer?

Because of possible lawsuits, the company can't officially offer you the job prior to your passing the background check and drug test. But I agree, this is the last step before you get the job--I would consider it a done deal.

yeah this is common for many companies to do so. If you had an interview with the manager for instance they would usually say at the interview we need you to take a drug test and run your application though a criminal history check. If you applied online it would say the same. But yeah most companies will give you a drug test its kinda mandatory now some states pending or dont do them. Once youve passed the drug test and the criminal history part you should be good to go. Some times a company will just hire you on the spot cause there so desperate for help they wait for the results and then if theres a problem they will notify you and say hey you are not elligable for this job. The company will call and say the tests are in and you fail/passed. Call the place if you havent already and explain who you are and say I applied for this job and im just checking on the status of my application.

Don is right, if they were not interested they would not spend in excess of $1500 to do the background. The reason they say it is not an offer for employment is because if you have some "skeletons in you closet..." it may nix your chances. I work as support staff for law enforcement and we have to go through the whole shi-bang just like the cops do. Its a pain but if you get the job you can say you made the cut, if not it not meant to be. If you are turned down, ask why. At least in the future you can disclose whatever the problem was.

Where I work they look into debt and previous credit history. It's pretty invasive. The upside, this is one of the jobs that most people refer to as "The gravy-train"

Good Luck and don't stop looking for work, waiting for this one.

You should think that they're still considering all their options and checking to make sure they are hiring the best person for the job. They're most likely considering one or two more people as well as you but you can feel confident that you had two interviews and they went well! Only time will tell. Good luck!

Just my opinion, but they don't usually do a background check unless they intend to hire you. They just won't commit themselves until they see what the check says about you.

It is a good sign, at this point they are spending money on the prospect of hiring you. They wouldn't spend money unless they thought you were a good prospect

They want to make sure everything comes back clean and you did not forget to mention anything. They will probably make you an offer if your stuff comes back clean.

Well at least you know this companies won't have any ex-offenders as your co-workers which can be a great sign and it always better to not have junkies in a work environment
