I'm fourteen years old and I recieved my laptop as a graduation present. If you don't trust your son and are going to be constantly worrying or checking what he's on, then I wouldn't get it for him. If you trust him enough then go, for it. You just have to hope that you instilled the right values in him and that he will know better.
Don't get him the computer if you are going to be checking it. Giving him the computer is telling him I trust you. Checking it and putting parental controls and stuff is taking away that trust and making him feel like a baby and in my opinoin more likely to defy you.

No! Have the computer in a public space. When he is older and has gained your trust should be allowed a laptop.
I had a computer once I turned 14 without Internet access. Is he getting Internet? That would not be a good idea. Especially if he does homework in his room! Computers are so distracting.
Or start out supervising him and then later let him have it in his room with the door open. Feel free to ask him about what he does on line. If you both trust one another things will be fine. He has to earn the privilege. My parents were smart and I did not get internet until I needed it for college. Young teens can get into trouble online... Be careful.

As long as his use is monitored I think it is fine. My 11 year old has a computer in his room. He uses it nightly for school. It has internet access. We just monitor his usage. More and more it seems like this generation is unable to do their school work without the access to a computer. A laptop would give you even more flexibility for him to use it in or out of his room, and it is nice on trips, because he could take it along to watch movies. Good parenting can overcome all other issues. If you are in tune with what your kid is doing a laptop in his room should not be a problem.

NO. Kids and computers (Their own) are a recipe for disaster. He can use the family computer for homework where there is supervision. Also, laptops are not safe for guys if they actually keep them on their laps. I have heard that it does something to the sperm.
My husband trusted his son and he went on porn site on my computer and he had instilled values and moral in him and his sister too. Blind trust is what it is called. Kids will try to get away with things even if they have been taught not to.

If you trust your son, then it's between you and your son. Make sure he knows that you will be supervising what he does, and if he meses up you'll take it away. Trust yourself in this situation.

I think it's ok for him to have one but I would still have him use it where you can keep an eye on him and what he is doing.
