If you did not have diabetes, how would you feel about stem cell research? You'd probably feel how your Christian "friends" (some friends they are, btw) do. You have a bit of a selfish motive going on here. Either follow your belief's teachings or not; don't tailor them to your particular circumstance. If your friends got knocked up, watch how fast they'd think abortion was OK.
Edit: Elaine, stem cells are not the same as dead babies. Not even close. They're microscopic. You need to understand something before you condemn it, don't you think? And, btw, diabetes can be managed. My husband has it. Stem cells might be able to cure far more dangerous and crippling diseases than that--unless, of course, the deluded fundies get their way.

being a strong christian is not something that you need to have vailidated by other self-proclaimed strong christians, life is sacred and at the same time if it werent for death than there would be nothing sacred about life, to be against stem cell research is absurd in a world where the same people that claim to be against it because of the sancitity of life, dont care about animal life, plant life, or the death and killing that goes on in the bible and because of the bible, If you truly believe that you are a strong condition and you believe that stem-cell research goes toward the betterment of your fellow man then you are right in your ways and anyone that tells you different doesn't have a leg to stand on.

I can understand your situation and I empathize with you. But with all due respect, welcome to the club. Religionists (like yourself) have been working to make their irrational agenda public policy for years. You may very well have been fully involved with them on every other issue in the past, but now, because you are on the receiving end of the dogma and stupidity you are crying foul. I could tell you tough luck and that you are just reaping what you've sown, but it makes more sense to highlight to you how damaging these irrational and dogmatic opinions can be when they are used to shape public science policy.
What most religionists fail to grasp--because their ministers *deliberately* lie to them--is that all stem cells are harvested from specimens left over from fertility treatments. Not one single embryo has been created for the purpose of stem cell research.

(You might want to change that scared to sacred.) I have no way of understanding most religious people's attitude to stem cell research. As far as I know, no embryo has ever been conceived to be used for research. The embryos they use are embryos created in fertility clinics which are not going to be implanted. I guess it's more moral to just throw them away than to use them for something useful. :<

strong and believe is sacred you mean?
There is a difference between stem cell research and embryonic stem cell research. I explained this in a previous post. Hang on, let me find it...Here it is (I am a little ways down on the Q):

I'm not sure as a Christian where I stand on that issue. I don't know enough about where they get the cells from. But I just wanted to tell you that God has a reason for all of our trials. He promises to use all the bad in our lives for our good if we love Him. Just keep praying for a healing for yourself. All genetic tampering is kind of in a gray area for Christians. God can heal anything. I once prayed over a woman who was healed of cancer. God can do all things and He doesn't need science to do it.

They probably won't understand any way you tell them, but when they're the ones in need of stem cells then they'll understand.

They simply can't wrap their minds around your situation. They're missing a little something called empathy, and until they cultivate that, they won't ever be able to understand you...
