I really want to follow that tradition....but I'm a little nervous about being skyclad....do we HAVE to be skyclad...even if I tell the priest/priestess that I feel more "right" with clothes or a robe on?
When get ded/init can I just where a robe and some pants? lol

I don't mind about others being nude..if that's what works for them...good....but it's not like that with me....but I still want to be Gardnerian...I even sent a letter to a Gardnerian coven from Witchvox and am ready to ded in Spring...but I'm just nervous...any experienced Gardnerians know?

I read this question last night but didn't answer because I'm not Gardnerian, but I couldn't stop thinking about it. If you are nervous about being nude in front of others, it's only because of the snickers and silly bodypart words we've all been taught from childhood and carry into adulthood.

The nude body is a work of art no matter what shape its in. The point of skyclad in ritual is to promote unrestricted flow of energy into the purpose.

Good luck.

PS. If you've never experienced a full moon in the nude, you've missed something special!

I believe it actually depends upon the Coven and their High Priestess and High Priest. Most of the ones I've ran across don't have a problem with their members wearing Robes. In fact I've only ran across one that required skyclad at all, and then they only required it for the Initiation and Dedication.

Have you actually approached a Gardnerian HPs with your questions yet? If you are already in contact with a coven, I would suggest asking the HPs what purpose sky-clad practice serves within her coven. The answer may help you get over the jitters. If it doesn't, or doesn't seem to really address your concerns, then ask her what her custom is for nervous dedicants. If she is adamant about requiring sky-clad practice, you will have to decide for yourself if this is the group with which you want to study. Don't be afraid to talk to the HPs. She won't bite, and she may be able to refer you to another coven that better fits your current needs.

Nudity is a factor for that trad. If you don't want to do it, try another trad. You should know that Gardener was a nudist before he began looking into magic and developing Wicca. He felt it was necessary, but if you don't, why should you do it? Personally, the idea that our ancestors were naked, at sabbat, outdoors, in the very chilly British winter nights strikes me as goofy. I love going nude. I feel fantastic. It can be a sign of sacrifice to some, liberation to others. There is power in each. But, I doubt there is much history to back up this practice. Follow your bliss is this hippie's attitude.

I suspect you would find, as do most people going to a nudist colony for the first time, that you felt totally out of it and embarrassed to be wearing clothes when all around were not.

You don't HAVE to do anything. Its up to you I suppose. I admit I am not well versed in Garderian though.

If you want to do it, you have to do it right.
