Instead of Christmas they could celebrate these days. Have presents, have a play where atheists kids pretended to be on the Beagle, eat, gather with family, and celebrate evolution. Even have the stores decked out for them.
I still wonder if this would to happen would they still participate in Christmas? Plus would a theists participate in an atheist holiday?

Blue,
I didn't say atheists are not allowed to participate in Christmas. If Darwin's birthday was to be celebrated a christian child should have the right to play Darwin in a school play.

Senor, did I say it was a religion? Holidays is not exclusive to religion. Call it a celebration if you will. Thanksgiving is not a religious holiday.

I guess you're right. Because I don't believe in God, I shouldn't be allowed to partake in the very secular festivities that Christendom co-opted from the pagans. And in any case, I for one DO celebrate Darwin's birthday (it's my birthday, too...(and Lincoln's)).
EDIT: Maybe I overreacted. Sorry. If your question is serious, I say why not? We celebrate a lot of stuff, why not celebrate one of the most significant intellectual achievements of our species? It might be of interest to know that some people celebrate "Newtonmas", because Isaac Newton's birthday happens to correspond to Christmas on the Julian Calendar.

Ohh... interesting ideas. Better yet, we can celebrate by having gratuitous sex and seeing how the human race will evolve then. Are you in?
Seriously now, I'm convinced that any type of organized celebration/organization based strictly on otherworldly belief is a bad idea. Even for atheists. Besides, look at the word holiday. Holy + Day = Holiday... If I'm an atheist and nothing is holy, it would be blasphemous to celebrate a holiday, wouldn't it?

Jesus replaced into no longer born on Christmas, that replaced right into a version of a pagan holiday used to benefit greater followers to the religion, and that i opt for to no longer worship something organic or supernatural, i'd desire to care much less approximately darwin's birthday.

I am a theist and completely believe in evolution, scientific theory, the big bang, and especially quantum physics. Atheists are not the only ones out there who respect science. I would be happy to celebrate Darwin's Day with you!

Atheism isn't a religion, why on earth would we need the equivalent of a religious holiday?
I'm perfectly happy to go on celebrating Christmas and Easter and such, I just ignore the religious aspects and concentrate on the secular and familial aspects.

Sure, I celebrate all holidays. I'd add that one to the pile, but if you are suggesting that we lay off Christmas...no dice. It's family tradition and I see no reason to give it up. It's the celebration of the winter solstice. Our celebrating it takes nothing away from you.

What do you mean INSTEAD of? I always note Darwin's birthday (12 Feb, since you ask). But there isn't as much to eat as there is at that great pagan orgy in late December.

Darwin? Newton is more important.
I give gifts to everyone in my family on Isaac Newton's birthday.
Of course, he was born on December 25, 1642
