Yes "hematology" is literally the study of blood.

However, when referring to bloodwork, doctors will sometimes call a specific set of information the "hematology" or "hematology report." In this case, the hematology is a set of information obtained from the blood by running lab tests, and it tells the doctors about the numbers and types of blood cells that are present in a blood sample.

The hemotology includes the Packed Cell Volume (PCV) or Hematocrit (HCT), which is the percent of the blood that is made up of red blood cells. It also includes the White Blood Cell count (WBC) and Red Blood Cell count (RBC). And it even breaks it down into the types of white blood cells that are present -- for example it gives the numbers of Neutrophils, Monocytes, Lymphocytes, Eosinophils. And it usually gives a count of the Platelets present in the blood sample.

And it gives doctors information on the size, shape and condition of the cells, which can be very important information in diagnosing a disease.

By using all of this information, doctors are able to determine if a patient is anemic, has a leukocytosis (high white blood cell count), thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), etc. It enables them to figure out what is going on with a patient, and why.

Hope this helps.
