Contact the Red Cross but it will still have to go through his chain of command.

Do contact the nearest Red Cross. It is up to his superiors and what job he is performing which may or not require a relief. If his grandfather raised him (loco parenti) then it can most likely happen. If not, it is up to the generosity of the command.

That is up to his commanding officer. Does transportation exist to get him there? Can he be relieved of his duties temporary? Is it good for the unit? Others will expect the same treatment for other relatives irregardless of their status. I couldn't come home for my only grandmother when I was in the Gulf.

Same thing happened to my husband.
I had to go to Rear D and prove that his grandmother was the one who raised him. It wasn't easy to do but it was the only way they would let him come home. And by the time it went through all the proper channels it was too late to attend the funeral, but he went to the cemetary and paid his respects.

I am sorry to hear about your loss.

Only if his granddad raised him for a certain length of time. The AF has a reg...I believe it's 7 years. We had an Airman deployed with us who wasn't able to go home because he could prove she raised him.

Under most circumstances yes.

Contact the American Red Cross this second.

Nothing happens until they notify his commander.
