Most work places would allow him family time away for the day. Prob with no pay, but they wouldn't fire him. Best thing for him to do is call his boss and explain that she is at the end and that he needs to be there with the family. I'm sure they'll understand.

If he is not Union, probably yes....however I would hate to think that any employer would be that heartless. It can happen, even though it would seem unreasonable to any decent person out there. A good lawyer could fight it, but it would probably cost you more than just going and getting another job. A Catch-22 situation.

My question would be, why does he need to be there? If it was me, I would go to work, explain that I might need to leave at a moments notice. This respects the employer and there is a good chance they will say, just go on.

No. they shouldnt be able to fire him..if worse comes to worse he can take personal days..but if he explains the situation and shows prove that she is in the hospital they really shouldnt be able to do anything about it. Good luck!

He should speak to his boss tonight about the situation with his grandmother.
Unless the boss or company are complete trolls, I'm sure they will tell him to go be with his grandmother.

Basically, a company can fire you for anything they want. There are some state specific laws.

He needs to tell them he has a family emergency and can't come to work. As long as he informs them and doesn't just not show up, he should be fine.

most employers will be lenient on it because its family and if you give them a notice. legally though they can fire him or just give him some kind of punishment for it ie. written up.
if she dies then of course he would have bereavement pay.

They can fire him for almost anything, however, depending on if you think it was wrong, you can fight it and/or sue them.
