The only number being held for unofficial retirement are the #3 and the #28.

#28 might be used because of the sale of the #88.

The numbers belong to NASCAR, not the teams. The teams lease the numbers on a yearly basis, and teams currently holding a number have first dibs on it.
There are no numbers retired, either officially nor unofficially.
RCR currently has the lease on the #3, and continues to lease it. They've just decided not to use it at this time.
If RCR sells out, or closes shop, and the new owner decides not to renew the lease on the #3, it will be up for grabs.
The #28 is not 'retired' either. #28 has been used since Davey, by both Irvan & Jarrett. It's simply been inactive. RYR has the lease on it, and will most likely start using it again next season, as they've turned the rights to the #88 over to HMS.

The #3 is not being used, Nascar doesn't retire numbers like MLB,NFL,NBA, the #28 is coming back next yr being used at Yates racing..If any numbers would be officially retired it should be the #3 and #43..

NASCAR doesn't own the numbers, just like the NFL, NBA, etc don't own the numbers. The numbers belong to the team, and the reason they're divided the way they are is to prevent confusion during the races.

I'm not sure of any other number other than the number 3 that's unofficially retired.

First of all the "King" Richard Petty drove the #43. The # 28 is a championship # that is currently not being used.

How could you not know what RP's number was? Good grief! Well, I think in my life time that the #3 will never be used.
