I am a young man (early 20s) suffering immensely from sexual attration to men. Thus far I have never acted on my attractions and never wish to do so.
Instead, I am hoping and praying I will be able to overcome these attractions and be straight. I know I cannot function as a homosexual, because for me the shame, guilt, STD risk, and religious consequences are too great for me to ever be happy in this way of life.
So do you believe change is possible? And if so, how can I change?
This question is serious and desperate and I do not mean to cause anyone offense.

You need the overcoming power of the Holy Ghost. With this we have the authority and power of God Himself to overcome our temptations. It is the only way to avoid the sinful temptations of the flesh.
There are so many testimonies of the believers that had every type of temptation taken from them by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. There is nothing to big or to small that He won't help us to overcome.

You have three choices in this case and the first two will result in a miserable unfulfiling existence.
1. Lead a chaste life. Never act on your feelings and ignore the entire sexual side of your being. I believe most religions think that the homosexual "sin" occurs only if you act on your desires. Think about how horrible it's going to be to try and ignore a piece of who you are. It's not going to feel good. Sexual attraction and relation is a natural part of the human existence.
2. Try to pretend you are heterosexual. Get married, have kids, etc.. However, b/c one cannot force themselves to be attracted to someone I highly doubt this rout will lead to happiness. Most likely you wil always feel un fulfilled. Think about it, if you told a hetero person that gay was the only right way to be and that if they did not conform they would burn in hell, do you think they would be able to do it? Do you think they would be able to genuinly make themselves attracted to the same sex? No, of course not. They could fake it, but they would never be truly happy. Same goes for homosexuality. People are just not ready to accept it yet.
3. You could just learn to love and accept yourself for who you are. You did not chose to be gay and there is nothing wrong with it. Remember, the bible was written thousands of years ago in a time where proliferating the species was of utmost importance. That is why the anti gay stuff is there. Also, the bible has been translated and retranslated and modified so many times no one knows what was originally in it. The word "homosexual" did not exist when it was written so when translating people just put that word it b/c there was no direct way to translate.
You need to make yourself happy. You can still have faith in god and be a decent moral person and be homosexual.

If you continue to deny your true feelings then you will be miserable for your entire life. You need to change your point of view on the whole guilt and religion thing. Love, no matter where it comes from is a blessing. If you are attracted to men then you need to face it and be who you are. Because you can pretend it isn't there but it will never go away, so be happy with who you are and go find a nice boyfriend. You should probably ask some questions in the gay/bi/trans section.

Yes, change is possible. One does not have to have sex with anyone. But just jumping into bed with a woman is not the answer.
First get control of yourself. One way to help yourself is to stay away from pornography, bars and things where you are in more danger and likely to meet someone.
Many people have such attractions due to sex drive and masturbation in young years, the bloom of youth, even both sexes and for many even to animals or just about anything else. That is a time when one may be aroused most or all of the time.
I'd suggest you do other things to take your energy and attention off sexuality such as exercise and other wholesome passtimes.

You are n such a quagmire. A serious turning point in your life I have no advise or comment for you. Hopefully someone will have some words of comfort and direction for you. I believe people are born gay and I also believe God does not make mistakes.

They are starting to prove that being homosexual is in your genetic makeup... you cant change anything genetic about you... and you can only hide it for so long... like me... i have this red brown hair that i just hate...i color it black or dark brown... but the roots show and people do see them if i dont constantly keep hiding who i really am... you are just going to have to choose if you are ready to hide yourself or if you can just accept who you really are and understand that God will love you no matter what... he did make you after all :) and having sexual attractions to someone your same sex is normal...

Yes change is possible...if you really want to.. but know you can't do it yourself, but Christ in you can defeat that spirit of homosexuality. Find yourself a good man of God, to teach you the Bible... Just stay away from katholik priest.

Start asking girls to do things. Even if it is only a movie. Or lunch. Focus on the opposite sex. If you have not acted yet, i believe change might be possible. have you ever been with a woman? Good Luck!
