My Mac just crashed and I do not want another Mac. I'd like to have a reccomendation around $1000-1200. Toshibas have been suggested by my computer guy, but I'd like more professional opinions. Also, where is best to buy; store or online? Thanks a bunch.

Thanks for the tips so far. Sorry, my son in law has laid claim to my Mac, but I appreciate the offer.

I have a HP pavilion that we bought at Staples. I would definitely at least check them out in the store... that way you can see how they "feel" - different size keyboards, screens, etc. Then check prices online and see if you can get a better deal.

Wait until Black Friday and be early to Circuit City. They are going to have a really nice system for $400. Quantity will be very limitied so you must be one of the first 10-12 people. The average price of an computer that meets your needs is $600-$800. That will allow decent support in the future if your computing changes. Toshiba is OK, as is the Acer line. The better is a Sony, with HP and Compaq being near the top of reliability and service.
