I sell VW and for the money differance the Passat would be my choice.Besides the up front cost,the Audi will have maint. cost that make the Passat the best choice.The Audi has more status,but as I guess you know Vw owns both.

It's really personal choice, the Passat is bigger but you may prefer the interior of the Audi. I don't really have enough headroom in the A4 and I do in the Passat. The Passat is the more modern platform too, it's a much more recent design.

they are both really good cars, get the on that you like the best and appeals to you. I prefer the audi over the vw because of the looks and performance but its you choice, go with the one you liked the best.
