Here is how to figure it out
cent = 1/100
so 100 centimeters in a meter
and
Kilo = 1000
so 1000 meters in a kilometer
so.... 100 x 1000 = 100,000 centmeters in a kilometer

100,000
the sequence is (from greatest to least) kilo-(1000), hecto-(100), deka-(10), base unit(1), deci-(0.1), centi(0.01), milli-(0.001). metrics are all bases of 10. to convert from one to other, you simply move the decimal point over the amount of spaces from one unit to the other. there are 5 units to the right of km to get to cm. so, you move the decimal point 5 to the right. your answer is then 100,000. (in this case, you must realize the decimal point is understood. all numbers have decimal points after them but we don't write them since its a waste of time. (1 is really 1.0))
