A couple months ago, we found a little black kitten in our yard and so we kept her. At the time, she was only a little bigger than my hand. She was able to eat both hard and wet food, but at the time she had trouble with dry food. Maybe she couldn't eat it and she was just that hungry. Her collar was as big as when you put your thumb and first finger together in a circle.

Today, she's probably a foot long (without her tail), she eats hard and wet food as well as plenty of water. She's very, very spunky with a lot of attitude. She attacks the dogs playfully and acts like one of them (if she's even a she.) She's pure black with olive green eyes. She looks like a little black panther.

So- here are my questions. How old do you think she was when we got her? I can calculate age from that time.
What breed is she?
How do I tell her sex?

Thank you!

P.S. I can include a current picture if you e-mail me, t_trayne@yahoo.com.

Just to let you idiots know: No one wanted the kitten except us. We took her in probably a month ago. We had money for her food and litter box, and that's it. We plan to take her to the vet as soon as possible so please stop harassing me about that, that wasn't my question and I'm not looking for that type of advice from you ignorant people. If you don't think I know to take her to the vet, think again and CHILL OUT!

I'd say she might have been around 4 to 5 weeks old when you found her, the breed well there's not really anything to go on to determine that, probably a domestic short hair. Look under the tail if you see two puffed up places there, it's a boy, if not you've got yourself a little girl - this should be fairly easy to determined now considering the age and size of the kitten, my guesstimate on the kittens current age is about 4 to 5 months.

Guessing that she may be been around 5 weeks when you first found the kitten
The cat is probably way to young to tell the sex just by lifting the tail to see if there are testicles, so what you will need to look for when you lift the tail are at the openings. A male cat will usually have two opening resembling dots ( : )
On a female cat the top opening resemble a dot and the lower opening is line a line that goes straight up and down ( i )
Also a males opening seem farther apart then those on a female.
I am glad that you took the kitten in because (s)he probably would not have made it on it's own. Good Luck

It would be a good idea to take her to the vet. However, I can't say much on that. I found a black kitten in my dads car engine. He was going to kill her, but I saved her. I haven't taken her to the vet, but I have given her all the vaccines, and deforming medicine she needs. I have no clue what breed black cats fall under, but chances are if you found her wandering in your garden she is a mixed breed. And for the sex part, Get a hold of her, and flip her over on her back. If she is female, she wont have male animals parts dangling there. also male cats are more territorial. If you ever catch it with its but up to a tree and its shaking its tail, most likely it is a male, and he is marking. My best guess on age, would be about a month, or two.

What is sad is that if you had taken her to the vet by now for worming, vaccines, and an exam...you would know that!!!! Kittens need more than love and food. They need medical care too.

IGNORANT is thinking that from your little "description" we can tell age, breed and sex of a kitten!!!!! "She is probably a foot long without her tail"!!!!!!!! Well, THAT will tell us!!!!!! Geez...maybe we can tell you her real date of birth, how many were in her litter, and her parents names too!!!!!!!
Get a CLUE!!!!!!

Maggie...I am sure you feel vets know little. You probably feel that way because you don't take your animals!!!!!!!! Whatever. You even said that a vet can tell her what she was asking!!! Age, sex, breed. Pretty simple things!!!!!!!!

And Flutterfly...at this age, there are not going to be "dangling" male parts!!!!!!! Cat testicles do not generally "dangle" anyway!!! And at this are a male will not be territorial either. So, so many people that need to get their cats to the vet!!!!!

most cats that are found outside are either referred to as domestic shorthair or long hair........not all, but many of them. she is probably not a particular breed.

i would take notice of her teeth. she should probably start losing them at around 4 months and adult teeth will grown in. baby teeth tend to be much sharper then (coming to a tiny point) adult teeth, but they are also a bit smaller than adult teeth.

you have to work a bit harder at determining sex on a young cat than a puppy. the easiest way would probably looking at the rear to see/feel testicles. however, there are cases where the animals testicles may be retained (that happened to one of the testicles on my cat).

good luck with the kitten.

p.s. please spay/neuter your kitten when the age is right.

ok if u lay her on her back and rub her belly and nothing happens down there (something comming up like when a guy gets happy) then its a girl
if that does happen its a boy

it may have been maby 5.5 weeks if it was ok with wet but not so good with dry.

Way to say it FlutterFLy! Hey thats fun to say! Yea! SAVE THE KITTENS! And why do people think vets can do anything! I mean honestly! VETS KNOW LITTLE! Get that through your thick heads! THey can not tell you anything about the kitten's personality, they can tell you about the kittens sex and age is just an aprx for them too! THEY CAN"T TELL YOU ANYTHING ELSE! So people leave her alone....
