I have a grade 10 class and need ideas about what to do to help the community. So far we've thought of creating a "toy drive" or going to visit kids at a hospital.

*Note: The class budget is $0 so all the money (if any) shall come out of the kids' pockets.

In warmer weather, you could clean up trash.
What about re-cycling; does your community participate?
You could encourage composting, especially vermiculture.
How about collecting winter coats, hats, mitts, & scarves?
Either getting people to knit them, or work with dry cleaners.
How about a food drive for Thanksgiving or Christmas?
If you collect toys for hospitals, you need a way to sterilize.

Take the class to work on a Habitat for Humanity Project. Call the local Habitat and let them know how many kids you have and they will be very welcomed. 10th graders can be fantastic yard crews or painters. I also strongly suggest taking the class to the dedication cerimony when the house is done. That why they get to see the family they helped and see the appreciation of the good work that they do.

Or just setup a weekend to go Rake Leaves for the elderly.

How about a recycling project? They could collect recyclables, get the money, and do something like paint park benches or something with the money. They could also have toy drives in their community (door to door with an adult chaperone), wash the plush toys given and repair other items, and then take them to a homeless shelter or similar site. Good idea to do a community project!

Adopt a day care center or nursing home in your area. Provide a party with appropriate gifts, and perhaps sponsor a larger gift for people to go in on together, like maybe some piece of equipment they need. Provide labor - paint, clean, etc. if needed.

Volunteer at the local Humane Society. Walking dogs, Washing cages, Washing dogs. and MORE! There is so much you can do for these animals while they are waiting for someone to adopt them.

You can do a dog food drive, collect newspapers, old towels, old blankets for use in the cages!

Good Luck!

apart from volunteering time and effort to local charities, they could come out of that school with exceptional marks and go on to greatness where they could really help their community.

carpe diem!

A local hospital will welcome you all. Start there and bring gifts.
