All chickens have a tooth when they hatch; it's called an egg tooth, and it's to help them get out of their shell; however, it's on the TOP of the beak, and it disappears shortly afterward. There are LOTS of genes that are still in the DNA makeup of all creatures that are "switched off" by short leading DNA sequences (most of the time). Remove or alter those short controller sequences, and the old characteristics assert themselves and are expressed. Our entire evolutionary history is written in our genes; it's not like we threw them out when we got tired of them; they just got replaced/overridden/modified with something different, and usually better.
