What are the costs involved in getting a cell phone that will work in Iraq? What companies have them for sell? Do a lot of soldiers have them over there? I have a daughter in the National guard who may be going there soon!
Thanks!

Having a cell phone in Iraq can get expensive depending on how much you use it. To buy the phone it is best to wait until you get to Kuwait. Once in Kuwait you can buy one for around $60 to $100 depending on the model. DO NOT BUY ONE STATE SIDE. The cell phones over here take a Sim Card, the cell phones in the states can not have the Sim Card changed out. The Sim Card cost $35. The Cell Phones in Iraq Take Calling Cards they range from $5 to $30 Cards. You get 10 mins per $1 of calling card. The signal is not the best at all times but it is ok. If your daughter is going to talk on the phone a lot I would recommend using the DSN lines the Chapel’s offer, have her dial 809-463-3376 from a DSN in Iraq, and use a state to state Calling Card Using this method allows for her to get minute for minute on the Calling Card. I use my cell phone from over, but only for emergencies. I use the DSN number above for day to day calling or when I want to talk for more than 5 mins.

she will have to wait until she gets there to see if she will even be allowed to have one. in many places cell phones are not allowed at all.

they tend to be expensive to buy and the service is spotty at best.
