If believers kept themselves to themselves and did not try to influence the rest of the world, it wouldn't matter. If people entered into your belief as an adult, making their own free choice, it wouldn't matter.
But they don't. They want to influence society to impose their view of the world and indoctrinate their children. Some of this I can accept, but some I cannot.
I am not suggesting that all aspects of christianity are bad. That is clearly not true, and some believers contribute to society in positive ways because of their religion.
You are quite right. Atheism doesn't mean anything in itself. It is just not believing what you and other believers believe. However, christianity does mean something, and what it means to some believers is potentially dangerous.
Amongst others, one problem is that some believers in christianity believe in the literal truth of the bible. This is really quite strange and I would not be at all happy for that to become (again) the accepted view.
That is why I bother. That is why I will try and point out when I think you are wrong. That is why I hope other people will not believe as you do.

I have never yet met an Atheist (yes, I know quite a few, and I am one also) that has ever tried to promote Atheism.
However, a very good friend of mine who is a Roman Catholic still tries to persuade me to 'come back to the flock' every time we have a discussion on religion.
I was born and reared a Roman Catholic, but one day after a chance meeting and long talk with a young (in his 20's) homeless man when I was 17 (I am now in my late 40's) I 'stepped outside the box' so to speak, and began to see things in a new light with freedom of thought and a clear mind free of dogma, it was my choice, no-one elses, everyone has their own beliefs and should not try to impose their beliefs on anyone else.
I will defend my right to have a free mind, as you have a right to live within your comfortable box secure in the belief of an absent deity.
Cozy xx.

I'm living proof that you're wrong. I was once a Catholic, and now I'm an atheist.
As for this:
"What does it matter anyway, if we're wrong then everyone is dead forever, but if we're right then we live eternally..."
You're bringing up what is essentially a variation of Pascal's Wager, which has been refuted so many times, I'm surprised anyone uses it anymore. This has been beaten to death here on Yahoo! Answers, just do a search here for "Pascal's Wager" and you'll quickly find out why it doesn't work.

Unlike some of the uneducated answers for this question I have to say that I agree with you in total regarding once a christian always a christian. This is what makes christianity unique because all the so called ex christians were never christians in the first place. Yes they may have done all the things that christians do, but if they had known Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour it would be impossible to convert back.
This comment that I have made would make me unpopular with so called ex christians.
However read John ch10 and note v28, And I give unto them eternal life: and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
Ex christians simply do not exist.

You can't say with any honestly "No one who has received Jesus into their heart is going to give it up" because there's no way for you to know that. If someone did, of course you're then just going to make the accusation that they hadn't REALLY accepted Jesus into their hearts. It's an argument that can go on forever. There's NO honesty in that comment. It's the same argument that fraudulant faith healers use after taking people's money, when later the person isn't healed. "Well, you didn't have enough FAITH...it's your OWN fault..."

Most atheists and agnostics don't try to promote their beliefs. They just want to make sure that you Christians don't take away any more of our rights.
Your argument about what happens if you are wrong is a variation of Pascal's Wager. It's logical fallacy was exposed years ago.
You say that if you are wrong, that nothing matters. On the contrary, if you are wrong then you wasted EVERYTHING worshiping a false god -- while Atheists and Agnostics found meaning in mankind and led full and meaningful lives.

Accepting Jesus is one thing, being baptised in the Holy Spirit is another.
I walked away for many years, but came back. In 4 years my life has changed dramatically.
Its good to know that even if we walk away from Him, He will never walk away from us.
Its also interesting Gelfling quotes Luke out of context : here Jesus is telling a story, not giving a command, and the rest of the quotes are from Old Testament scriptures, which are before the Age of Grace under which we live now.
Atheists , and in fact most of the people I meet every day like to quote out of context, andf so did I once. But when the Holy Spirit opens your eyes, the bible becomes a Living Word.
Hold on to what you've got, its very precious, God bless and keep you !
2Ti 2:12 If we continue to endure, we shall also rule with him. If we deny him, he also will deny us.
2Ti 2:13 If we are not faithful, he remains faithful, because he cannot be false to himself."

I come from a very strong religious background, but I parted from it all when I came of age and went off to discover the world for myself. People definitely can and do fall away from religion all the time, just as some find their way to it.
That said, I have no desire to even try to "convert" anybody. I just enjoy the discourses :o)

"No one who has received Jesus into their heart is going to give it up, honestly!! "
...I did!
"What does it matter anyway, if we're wrong then everyone is dead forever, but if we're right then we live eternally, so why try to promote atheism anyway, it doesn't mean anything."
I'd rather live a nice life not having my schools and government corrupted by religious dogma.

I think you will find that most Atheists such as my self let people believe in what they like until the God believers try convincing us otherwise. We are not interested in disproving you science is on the right path of doing this anyway. In fact we would be more interested in you lot scientifically proving that he does exist.
