it's always good to be healthy. exercising is good for the brain and the soul as well as the body. alot of people feel less stressed when they have a somewhat of a routine i.e. the gym or going for a run.
plus you could meet some fine ladies there ;o)

If you are looking to beef up, then joinging a gym can help you, since there are usually large weights there, or machines that focus on certain muscles. Unless you have these at home, then you're options are lots of push-ups and sit-ups, but unless you are already a big person (which it sounds like you aren't) this won't make you bulk up. To bulk up, you need to work with large weights, and few reps. Also, I personally like going to the gym simply because I get more energy to workout when I am around other people (don't know why).
If you can find a gym that doesn't ask for money, like a school gym that allows for public use, that has plenty of weights, then I would recommend going there. Then you don't waste money, and can get a good workout.
That's really all I can give you. Hope this helps!

Only if you are going to use the membership. A lot of people go for a few months, then stop going while still paying the membership fee.
If you are interested, I would try all of the gym's out in your area. Most of the time they will give you a free week trial. Somtimes they have specials where there are no initiation fees. Just remember that those guys are in sales, so don't give in until you make the decision for yourself.
I ended up spending a lot when I joined 24 hour fitness because I bought training also. I now pay around 20/month in dues. I've thought about joining LA fitness, but I don't know if I want to pay the initiation fees again. From what I hear, the membership is 29/month, but you have to pay $150 in fees and first and last months membership(maybe the first and last month's payment is included in this number?)

I think that if you just want to bulk up, you just need some weight work, which you can do at home. You can buy a set of weights, or be creative and "make" your own (yes, I AM being serious). Gather heavy objects to lift with. If you do buy something, those flex machines seem pretty good, they use your own body weight and bands as resistance, so you don't have heavy weights; also, they're usually small enough to fold up and store out of the way. This would be much cheaper in the long run then a gym, and you can do it whenever you have time without having to wade through a crowd. Another good, free muscle builder: go to Habitat for Humanity or do yard work for seniors/shelters, etc; with fall here and winter coming, they'll really appreciate your help, and weekends/after 5 will be perfect!

I go to the gym as I have other issues (i.e for physical re-hab) and I have found that there are more than one type of member ship. For EG: You can spend EG $40 and get 15 passes, or you can buy quarterly, half yearly, yearly. They also have other types of membership's as well. Why don't you pay the small amount (1) To guage how often you would use the service to see if it is wirth the money (2) If you go for a couple of months you'd see if you were targeting your goals (3) When you join, you get a fitness assessment to make sure you don't have any health probs and to talk about your goals. They also tailor the exercises (i.e what machines to use) so that you can achieve your goals of "bulking up". Also in relation to "bulking up" gym staff will be able to talk to you about your diet and see what foods would work best for your body type (i.e high metabolism that finds it hard to put weight on). Opening hours in gyms are flexible and some even open up until 7-8pm (and on weekends!) so you should be able to get a work-out without too mauch hassle. Good luck

Yes, it is worth it. Not only do you have access to equipment or an amount of weight that almost no one can afford on their own, but you can find like minded people and train with them. Your training partners can motivate you when you don't feel like working out and you get to return the favor when they're dragging their heels.
The quickest way to pack on quality muscle is by lifting heavy. I don't recommend one rep max sets a they are more about perfect technique. So stick to the 4-6 rep range and change it up once in a while and go lighter to give your joints a break.
Powerlifting's big three - flat bench, squats, and deadlifts should be the core of your workouts. Throw in some Olympic lifts such as the clean & jerk (my favorite) as well as strongman type lifts (get creative!) and you have a great routine for putting on quality muscle.
NOTE: You don't need to do as many sets when you're going heavy, so you don't have to be in a crowded gym very long to get an awesome workout.
Good luck and train hard!!

it's well worth joining, try to find a smaller not so well none one to start with. there cheaper, and have all the machines needed to start of with,,,
don't forget just going to the gym pushing loads of heavy weights ain't gonna guarantee results if your slim build your going to need to gain some weight, start to increase your daily calorie intake they say 2000-2500 a day for a man, try to get that to 3500-4000 by eating good quality food, believe me it will work i was 9 and a half stone when i started and have always been slim, im now 11 stone 11lb 6 months later..... i go to the gym 3-4 times a week increasing the weight i lift each time and i only do 30-45 Min's per session.
try not to buy weights for the home, trouble being there is always something else to do at home and the weights don't get done... join a gym eat lots, give it 6mths to a year and u should be the size and weight u always wanted,, good luck

Gym's are GREAT if you stick at it and go 4 times a week or more to make your money worth while & yes, people do meet other people at the gym. It's actually a good place for singles! What's more important though is that you're doing something good for your heart and body! Exercise is terrific. And your body will THANK YOU!!!

Best move I ever made, everyone can find time to go if they really want too. Before I retired I used to get up at 6.30am and do a session before I went to work. I was able to persuade my partners to let me start work 15 minutes later at 9.15 to give me a chance to have a full work out. If I could not manage a morning I would skip lunch and go then. Another option is to leave it until after 8pm, gyms tend to get quiet again by that time.
You might find it helpful to choose a gym either very close to work or to home, rather than worrying which gym it is. They all have pretty similar machines anyway.

if you really want to beef up...definitely join a gym. although...if you have some extra cash you can go to sears or target or walmart even and pick up a barbell set and a weight bench. the nice thing about the gym is they have a million different weight loads and also the machines if you like that kinda thing. i would say that after 5 it will be crowded but mostly the cardio and weight lifting machines. ussually the barbells and free weights go untouched. in the long run, buying your own set and bench will be much cheaper and way more time efficient as well. hope this helps! :)
