I am 19 and live at home while going to school. I met a guy stationed at Ft. Benning, his parents live like 30 miles from me in Alabama. He wore a tan beret, Does that mean he's a Army Ranger? If so what do Rangers do? I really like this guy and he didn't want to talk about the war much so I never really asked.

He said he was a Sgt. His uniform had three stripes.

If you really don't know then it's not a dumb question. More than likely he is a Ranger. If he has three stripes, he's an E-5. If he is stationed at Fort Benning then he is probably with the training regiment of the 75th.
I wish you luck, Rangers can be a wild bunch.

Once characterized by a Black Beret, the Tan Beret is now the symbolic beret of the Army Ranger. Yes he is then. Now there is a difference being Ranger qualified and be in a Ranger Regiment. If he is at FT Benning then he is probably apart of the 75th Ranger Regiment. They train the ranger candidates in Ranger School.

It just means he is assigned to the Ranger Batallion. As such he can somewhat claim he is a Ranger, but unless he actually has been to Ranger School, he is not a real Ranger.

If he is a Sergeant or above, it is a bit more likely he has been to the school.

It means he is in a Ranger unit, which doesn't preclude him from being a Ranger, also doesn't necessarily mean he is one, either. Rangers are basically hardcore infantrymen who are trained to accomplish their mission at all costs.
