I'm confused.

I've heard different stories from different people.

Some say you can, some say you can't.

Which is it?

Thank you

You take a test that shows your aptitude (if you don't have a specific degree like engineering). Then, you do have options but just like anywhere there have to be openings. With today's military, you are less likely to get what you want unless it is a shortage category. So, both sides are right in a way.

My experience is with Navy only.

When you talk to the recruiter he will have list of jobs that they are recruiting extra hard for. You tell him what you are interested in, If it's on his HOT list you'll be offered it. If it is not on his list and you don't like the jobs he offers you, get ready to walk out. He will suddenly find that he has a less critical list to choose from. Again if he can't find something you are interested in walk out. You can always go back later and check again.

Now if you get delayed in boot camp (due to illness, injury, physical fitness, or disciplinary action) you may very well lose your opportunity for the job that you signed up for. There is no guarantee if you don't complete basic training on schedule.

These people are NOT correct. I am in the USAF. Before I even went to Basic I knew what job I was getting and it was a guaranteed job that was in my contract. You do not have to go into a specific field and then have them pick your job. It can happen this way but it doesnt HAVE to. Yes, I had to wait longer to ship out to get my guaranteed job; however, it was still guaranteed. So I am not sure where they are getting their information about the Airforce but they should get their facts straight first.

of couse you can, select from the 100's of mos's in any branch, the technical change to that option happens when a draft is implemented, then the military places you to where ever, regardless of what branch you enlist in and yes, naval and airmen were assigned tad to the marines, during the draft in vietnam and yes, several peoplr running for office in both partys want the draft to be restored

every branch guarantees you training. the Navy can guarantee training in a specific rating/job. the AF does it slightly differently. you choose a field (Admin, electrionics, etc) and they choose a job for you within that field.

Most services will not let you choose. After testing, they will decided what you are qualified for.
