My school is having a fun raiser of selling hot chocolate to students. What all do we need to make this fundraiser a success? Do we use h.c. powder? Where/how do we get the hot water?
Any advice would be VERY appreciated!

I'm 99% sure that we can't use the kitchen, so would there be any other way to heat the water?
Maybe we could use the Home Ec. classroom.
And I think quality is an EXCELLENT idea :)

We will be selling the hot chocolate in the morning (8-8:30) in the school cafeteria to high school students.
We can't use the cafeteria kitchen, but *maybe* (big iffy here) the home ec. classroom.

1) Get one of those big thermos containers that holds about 5 gallons (or 2.5 gallons) and make it in there.
2) If you care one bit about the quality of the product, use milk not water as the base.
3) Get some good quality cocoa mix. In those quantities, I would make my own cocoa with the unsweetened powder and sugar. Easy easy to make. (recipe on the back of the hersheys cocoa)
4) Have some nice toppings like cinnamon, whipped cream, marshmallows, shaved chocolate (all cheap except the whipped cream)
Trust me, Kids will appreciate the extra effort of a good quality hot cocoa over the watery stuff.

The problem with mixing huge amounts of any granular substance is that it can clog spigot containers, such as the one mentioned, above, even if it is well-diluted (of course, overdo the dilution, and the hot chocolate will taste like hot water with a brown crayon dipped in it, and that will be bad for sales!).
Without knowing the venue in which you intend on selling the stuff, it is difficult to give advice (e.g., fire/zoning/health laws? sports event or PTA-like meeting? etc).
Obviously, you have to prepare the stuff either in advance, which would make it difficult to carry, or at the location, which, IMHO, would be best/safest one at a time (i.e., use store-bought packets; if you bring an appropriate letter on school letterhead from and signed by the school Principal, and then present that to your local grocery store, they *might* sell you a carton or crate of the stuff without the sales tax, thus saving your school some money, which translates to more profit for the fundraiser).
A box of 10 individually wrapped packets of hot chocolate mix usually goes for under $2 (frequently, just $1), so selling the stuff for $1 per packet in an 8 ounce cup is not unreasonable; $2 might be pushing it (oh, yeah . . . don't forget to buy the disposable foam cups; earth-friendly, if possible!).
Good luck!

HOT COCOA MIX * 6 1/2 cups powdered milk * 1 (5 ounce) package non-instant chocolate pudding mix * 1 cup powdered chocolate drink mix * 1/2 cup powdered non-dairy creamer * 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar * 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder In a large bowl, combine powdered milk, chocolate pudding mix, chocolate drink mix powder, creamer, confectioners' sugar, and cocoa. Divide the mixture between two 1 quart jars. Seal, and decorate as desired. These can be stored in a dry area for up to 3 months. Dissolve 1/3 cup cocoa mix in 1 cup boiling water. Hopefully you have a coffee pot you can brew hot water in and plug it in so you can have hot water handy

Here is a reciepe for home made Hot Cocoa mix.
21 cups of powdered milk
11 ounces of coffee creamer
1 2 lb. container of Quick
1 lb. of powdered sugar.
Mix this all together, Takes a very large container to mix it in.
When you mix it in a cup, you fill the cup 1/3 of the way full with powder, then fill with hot water. It doesn't matter what size the cup, just fill it 1/3 of the way.
If you need more sugar, then add more, but it is quite sweet.
If you want to sell it by the cup for them to take it home, just fill the cup and put saran wrap around it to seal. You can also put the minature marshmellows in the cup.

Use hot cocoa powder (you can buy big containers at Sam's Club or Costco if your parents have a membership). You can boil the water in pots, the mix everything up in one of those big gatorade container things (like you see at football games) to keep it warm.

use the cafeteria to boil the water and just use hot choc. powder. another idea is to make a powdered hot choc. mix yourselves, and sell just the powder in cute bags that they can take home and mix with water or milk.
