While I don't own any rescues.... I do generally have one or two a year here from my chosen breeds rescue system as a foster. I find it WONDERFUL when the dog that was once a throw away is now someone beloved pet. To date - have had 8 foster dogs here. Currently on a "break" as it is hard sometimes with rehabilitation the last one just about broke my heart, she was a perfect in every way dog, just had every known parasite that a dog could have. She was thrown away over the cost of treatment.
Know that she has been cured - and in a wonderful forever home!

Right now I have no dogs but all the dogs we ever owned were from the SPCA. I would never own a pure bred dog. It's not that I don't like them, it's just that there are so many homeless dogs out there why breed more. Plus, they seem to have so many congenital problems and are constantly at the vets. I dog sit many breeds of dogs. I've watched mastiffs, pits, dobes, rott, norwegian elkhounds, irsh setters, etc. All have been on medication for something or other. The mutts I've watched, on nothing.
Well, I must say I watch loads of greyhounds who are purebreds but they are all rescued dogs from the track.
Kudos to you all who adopt rescued dogs.

We have two Shih Tzu's, both rescues. Andrew was found abandoned on the side of the road in North Carolina, and Lily was one of several dogs whose owner simply got tired of them and left them at a shelter. They are both wonderful dogs! We've also done foster care with other dogs, and it's great to see them go from being scared of everything, to being loving family dogs. Personally, I think any animal that was a rescue makes a better pet, as I believe that they never forget how it was for them before being rescued.

In Jan. 2007, adopted 1 1/2 - 2 year old(?) Boston Terrier/German Shorthair mix. He was picked up in Hotel room located on the Beach in Galveston, Texas, on Dec. 26, 2006. They tried to get in touch with the people, but phone number given was out of service. He stood out in the pound and walked great on leash first time out. Brought him home and only had one "accident". Since then has been a great dog. Now I can't seperate him for my 8 year old Dalmatian. Proud to rescue a great dog.
My first dog was a pound puppy. Border Collie/Dachshund mix. The postman was afraid of this little hairy dog...and mom paid for 2 pair of pants for the postman. LOL!

The first dog I was ever really attached to passed on, so the same day we went to the shelter to help my family cope. I would never have imagined to find such a dog! He's a German Sheperd. I have owned many dogs, but he is by far the sweetest, and he's such a ham. He is better trained than the other dogs we have. He guards well, and he sleeps on my bed. He follows my parents and me around; he's attached to everyone. I am sooo attached to him now-even more than Gunter, my previous friend. I don't know what I'd do without him honestly ...

well i dont own a dog from a rescue but i do have a dog that i saved him from a bad situation. i am really proud of him. sammy came from a really bad home. 15 puppies in the litter. in a 3' x 3' pen in a dark dirty dingy barn. he was the runt and he was the most timid. they were being fed watered down cat food and there was urine in their water. their mother was bred every time she was in heat. i took him because honestly i felt bad for him. and he was really sick. worms in his belly fleas all over. i got him on a thursday. the vet said he wouldnt have made it through the weekend. he grew up to be the best dog i have ever had. i had the opportunity to have a champion english springer spaniel for free. but i felt terrible for this little guy. we reported the people we got him from and to this day (two and a half years later) they r still working on the case. i honestly cant believe that they arent in jail for animal cruelty. honestly that was all i saw on that farm. i hope i never have to go back there. but i am proud to have my dog. he overcame near death and is still here today. i wouldnt trade him for the world
EDIT: notice how sickly he looked

this was the day after i got him look how bloated he was in the belly. honestly i dont know how they could have done that to their dogs

I got mine at the shelter about 8 years ago, he'd been picked up as a stray and no one ever claimed him. Sometimes I look into his eyes and inwardly laugh at the fool who let this dog go without searching high and low to find him - or at least calling the county shelter where he sat for over 2 months before I scooped him up. That person let a real treasure slip thru their fingers. Oh well, we were meant for each other anyways!

Good for you. I have only ever owned 2 dogs and I have rescued them both. One was a stray on the street (he lived with me for 18 years!) and the other I got from a neighbor who could not care for him.
