we want to build a earthship home these were designed by Michael Reynolds and there are many now in use in Az. There are a few other staes that now have at least one and they are also in othercountries. Since several have asked I am in the usa in SC. These home are expensive to build because of the solar panels and wind mills since this is good for the enviroment there should be grants to help us get this done

With no offense meant at all; primarily because your notion is a good one; I have to wonder WHY any agency would GIVE money to support you??? If Grants were like candy given to a kid; I'd have been FAT with money for years.
Beyond that,,, Solar and Wind power offering enough energy to keep a residential dwelling is still in its infancy. The costs are still prohibitively expensive for one thing. The land alone, needed for arrays of both technologies would have to be substantial; and the zoning to have Windmills at least; might be an issue.
Certainly the thought is valid, yet we still live in a Crude Oil based society. More money is spent on exploration of what fuels are left underground; than what we spend at the gas pumps. That's likely to be the focus for the balance of my lifetime I'm sure.
I do applaud you however; for NOT using the trendy new term "Off The Grid". I think if I hear that one more time, I'll eat a tree.
Of course there are modest Enviro friendly things you can do, but unless you're CONNECTED; I suspect funding for a "TEST" dwelling might take years to get.

You can find some useful info here: http://www.cat.org.uk/search/simplesearchx.tmpl and here: http://www.foe.co.uk/living/index.html ; http://www.ivillage.com/green - You have not specified where you live - in UK you can get grants for solar panels (government pays part of the price, you pay the rest - but they are still too expensive). But in general - you decision of going green is your own responcibility, and you'd have to fork out a lot of money anyway - unless you are under the grants category. But as far as I know - they only give grants to pensioners and those on low income etc (as if they could afford it even with grants!). I may be wrong. Try to search your local council office or find a local website for alternative technology - they should have links there.

Try the EPA site, or www.pueblo.gsa.gov. They may have something. Or you can even do an internet search for earthship home, solar and wind power and grants or something like that.

I don't think you will find an actual grant that will help you with paying for the cost of building your home. What you will find is state and federal agencies that will give you tax incentives for building energy efficient housing and or using alternative energy sources. You may also find that local and county agencies will also have tax incentives for these types of building practices. Another thing that you may find is that if you use alternitive energy the electric company will buy any unused electricity that you over produce.

Sit up and watch TV late at night until that infomercial with the guy in the jacket with the question marks all over it comes on. Then order his book.
