archimedes.

before archimedes no language had the ability to generate very large numbers. (greek could work with small multiples of 10,000 - very few languages could even get that far).

when archimedes developed his system for calculating with large numbers he almost invented mathematics (and until you have mathematics, there can be no advanced science).

when he died archimedes seems to have been working out an early form of the calculus.

if the romans (and later the christians) hadn't done such a good job of losing or forgetting most of what archimedes had discovered the world would have had telephones, digital computers and antibiotics in the middle ages.

if the muslims hadn't kept the ideas of archimedes alive while the western nations murdered each other in six hundred years of religious wars, we wouldn't have such things now.

It's hard to say since we don't know the reaction of everything everyone ever did. We aren't able to look at the big picture and all of history and know that if one person didn't exist things would be more different than if another person didn't.

good or bad effect, modern or ancient world?

I would have to say the person or persons who invented fire.

it was mankind's most important invention as it allowed all the others to follow as it turned us from scavengers/hunters/gatherers/survivers, to those who could begin to control thier environment.

which in turn allowed our minds to develop and think as we didn't have to be wary of animals that the fire might have kept away, we had time to reflect and invent tools rather than scrounge around for warmth.
