Most "video-philes" will tell you that the human eye cannot discern the difference between 720p and 1080p unless you are very close to the TV (<5ft) or you are getting a very large screen (>50").

Since the optimal viewng for that size of a TV is typically 6-10 feet from the set, it is doubtful you would ever notice the difference between 1080p and 720p.

Furthermore, 1080p signals are practically non-existent. Unless you are buying a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player you wouldn't even have anything that could dislplay 1080p in the first place.

I would suggest you save the $400 and buy the 720p, you can use the savings to get something to add to the experience such as:
-extended warranty if you want to be cautious
-Wall installation of the TV from Best Buy
-Harmony 880 remote control (best remote on the market for the price)
-PS3 40gb model (plays games, Blu-Ray movies, and become a media server to stream music, video, pictures from computer to your TV)
-Nintendo Wii
-Donate to a worthy charity

You didn't say what size screen, but even down to 32" the 720p is not as clear as 1080. 1080 is a lot sharper. Cable and satellite do have 1080 HD available (1080i - which is 1080 resolution just interlace instead of progressive refresh rate) and 1080 is better. Anyway - there will be more and more in 1080 as time goes on - think about future needs too. My advice is spend a little more money now and you'll be happier with it in the long run. There is a difference! The HDDVD players and/or Bluray output up to 1080p now and that's the resolution movie studios are using for hi def.

maximum all television's decrease than 40 inches are 720p.. 40 inches or larger, 1080i or 1080p....remember, ALL television stations and cable companies broadcast in 1080i no longer 1080p... 1080p is purely seen on Blu Ray HD DVD's or playstation -3 gaming....(SD can no longer make plenty distinction the two way..)

1080p better but it is only worth it if you have a Xbox 360 Elite and/or a PlayStation 3 to game on. You need Blu-ray or HD-DVD to enjoy movies in true 1080p. Other than that, 1080p is not worth the extra $400.

Digital cable and satellite don't have 1080p broadcasts as of yet because it would take up a lot of bandwidth.

1080p is better. Its going to have a sharper picture. It will be like looking through a window almost. Just think, you have trillions of rays of light that bounce of your face giving people a clear vision of you, a pixel is like a ray of light, the more there are the more complete the picture is, thus the more realistic and the sharper it will be. The more pixels, the smaller the pixels, the closer together the pixels are. More pixels will always equal better picture, more realistic picture.
Don't listen to these people who tell you there is no diff between 720p and 1080p with that size screen. Its a load of BS spread by cnet. Look at them side by side, you will see a difference, thus its worth it.
