Cavemen fought battles for their space. That was long before politicians or what we call war mongers. Some go to war because they feel they have no choice, that is not always the right answer though.

Basically all wars are simply robbery with violence. The only difference is that the instigators and those who profit by it don't do what an honest thug does and attack the mark himself, he gets others to take the risks while he not only profits by the loot obtained but by selling the gun to the thug. Guns are like chocolate, they are made to be used up and more sold when they are. The 2nd ww was the only good war in history, because we really were fighting Satan and his angels. But the war was started by Hitler and the Japs to steal other peoples property, that was the bottom line. Kings stopped leading their troops into battle and hacking half naked peasants to pieces when some rotter invented gunpowder and it stopped being fun and became dangerous. Now the Bomb is in play, and it is safer to fight wars via catspaws, but sooner or later the Bomb will be used again. Once the taboo is broken they will become popular. No, war is not really diminishing, it is just that the big players are becoming more careful. But just as suicide bombers destroyed the twin towers in the most powerful nation on earth, sooner or later a suicide bomber will pull the trigger of a nuke in the middle of Washington or London. You do not need icbms, you just need a pickup truck and someone who hates enough.

Well, you answered much of your own question with your treatise on War. War has been, is , and always will be a tool of the state to enforce it's will. Even the smallest tribes use war or warfare as a means to enforce its will and reinforce the groups cohesion to the state ( i.e. leadership, common good of community, growth both economically and in it's population,) War ensures a certain amount of population control, weeds out the chaff, etc.... All pretty intellectual but...
War is hell. It is an insiduous evil, a cancer that kills good people along with the bad. but....
War is an opportunity to practice the best in humanity by providing a proving ground for honor, dedication to something larger than ones self.
SOOOO, the answer as to WHY WAR? is in the question itself, why not?

War is when a leader, or leaders, use their peoples fear, hatred or jealousy of others, to justify their own pursuit of ideological or material aims.
War recurs throughout history not because of religions, but because leaders have used religions as a tool to manipulate both fear and hatred in people, towards the ultimate aim of achieving what they personally want. Selfish and power hungry leaders have always caused the beginning of any war, however they may have begun in history.
The initial wish to wage war starts as a selfish disease of the mind of a few, that will eventually spread to many.

War is a state of violent, large-scale conflict involving two or more groups of people. Wars may be prosecuted simultaneously in one or more different theaters. Within each theater, there may be one or more consecutive military campaigns. Individual actions of war within a specific campaign are traditionally called battles, although this terminology is not always applied to contentions involving aircraft, missiles or bombs alone in the absence of ground troops or naval forces.
The factors leading to war are often complicated and due to a range of issues. Where disputes arise over issues such as territory, sovereignty, resource, or ideology, and if a peaceable resolution fails, is not sought, or is thwarted, war often results. In War Before Civilization, Lawrence H. Keeley, a professor at the University of Illinois, calculates that approximately 90-95% of known societies engaged in at least occasional warfare, and many fought constantly.
A war may begin following an official declaration of war in the case of international war, although this has not always been observed either historically or currently, nor in the case of civil wars. A declaration of war is not normally made in internal wars

War is a disagreement that has escalated to violence.
War is a desire to seize control of a group of people or a plot of land physically.
War is a struggle.
War is NOT an economical process- only a fool would suggest it.
Take your over indoctrinated babble elsewhere.

War is the physical manifestation of greed, envy, and fear. Few wars are based on belief systems, most are waged for territorial gain, natural resources, or just sheer lust for what the other side has. The reason is constantly recurs is the fact that greed, envy, fear, and lust are all basic human emotions that will never go away. War has always been part of things, and it always will be, in one form or another.

some of you say we have wars because of religion, some say because of the state or politicians or etc, etc
the truth is that man has warred on his brother since he populated the earth.
it may have been because he wanted something the other had got, or ones cave was in a better position than the other.
but make no mistake,, man will war till he drives himself to extinction.
that was the biological switch that the maker built into your DNA.
And then he brought me into being to tidy up your mess.
