How many 'gigs' does an average film take up on an MP4?

It depends on the length of the film, the orgin of the film (what is has to be transcoded from), the compression & the quailty of the conversion.

It requires 1.5 mbps of MP4 to stream SD broadcast quality video. Converting to bytes, that is about 11 MB per running minute. A 90 minute feature film is about 1 Gig.

However 1.5 mbps requires a T1 internet connection, so much of what is downloaded is at a lower resolution setting.
