everyone should aspire to higher values.
if anything it allows us to look down on everyone else

Most Christians are Hedonists. They think that it is good to do what God says because then they will get to go to heaven and have (here place whatever pleasures and goods you like), but if you don't please God he will be angry and cause you pain, (forever in most cases). This you believe on the grounds that some person you never met read a book you don't understand and made a doctrine you have never fully examined. You are an adult. It is time to take the Sunday school lessons and examine them. Morality depends upon God like biology depends upon rain dances. The corn won't grow if you don't (here place what ever silly human idea that came into the ancient mind) kill the lamb, virgin, etc. You would have me replace a reasoned life with magical thinking? I will have none, sir.

What on Earth are you talking about?
I have never heard atheist purport to have any values in common other than that they do not believe that there is a god.
Those who do believe there is a god purport to have an enormous range of values, but half of them are bad, and the good half they never live up to.

Why would I have to ascend to something I already have? Maybe you can ask yourself if you could ascend to them though.

like "don't kill, and don't steal" i think their are some Christians that need to ascend to these higher values too.

Have you removed the plank from your eye? Atheists don't worship a sadistic, immoral, killer God who drowned, plagued, and slaughtered millions (more than Hitler); conspired to have his own kid brutally beaten and killed; and repeatedly COMMANDED his followers to kidnap, rape, hurt, and kill others. Can you say the same?
