I am considering buying an '07 Honda Pilot with 16K miles on it. The carfax report says it has never been wrecked. Yesterday it was being offered by the dealer on AutoTrader.com for 30,500. We drove it and noticed a ding in the right front fender. It was large enough to be noticeable, but still just cosmetic damage. Today AutoTrader reflects a reduced price of 29,000. We talked to the dealer and they now want to offer the car "as is" with no warranty other than the manufacturer's. They also said they would fix the dent. What gives? Why would they do this unless they are hiding something? What kind of questions should I ask to get to the bottom of this?

more than likely there is a problem with the car that they are not going to tell you. you still have the right to take it to a mechanic of YOUR choice to have it checked out. Carfax only gives you the reported accidents not mechanical problems so please do not rely strickly on them.
make sure the mechanic checks the compression in the engine. If things are cool with the car than get the dealer down more tell him you'll only give 27,000

There's probably nothing wrong with the car, they just reduced the price and removed the extended warranty. With the first price the 'free' warranty was just added into the price. With the second price, they just removed the warranty, and in turn, the extra charge. Of course you should still check out the car as thoroughly as possible before buying it and try to haggle the best price you can, but I would not be that concerned about the car's condition if I were you.

Surely the car will still have its factory warranty, hence making the dealers warranty unnecessary? Else, no warranty on an almost new car, I would walk away after there are many examples of these on the road.

Thats not a huge price diff. they may just want to sell it, or someone may have backed into it. Ask them why no warranty and als ask about other cars there and see if ther is a warranty on them and if so, then yes shady. Sometimes warranties are tacked onto the price, like a 1 yr. warranty will ad on to price of car.

Simple: because they don't have to. However, an 07 Honda should still have a couple of years left on the factory warranty.

This is standard operating procedure - it simply means the dealer will not at their cost provide additional warranty coverage. There is still 5500 miles left on the original bumper to bumper factory warranty - plenty of time to tell if something needs to be fixed. Also, I bet the dealer would sell you an extended warranty if you asked (actually, I bet they ask YOU if you want one...)

There is nothing at all wrong. It's a used car, so it is in as-is condition and they are not including an extended warranty. They even said "with no warranty other than the mfg's" that's all you need. That is all you would get if you bought it new. Absolutely nothing to worry about.

SOMETHING DOES NOT SOUND RIGHT WITH THE VEHICLE.

CONTACT THE VEHICLES MANUFACTURER AND GIVE THEM THE VIN AND ASK THEM FOR A REASON.

YOU CAN ALSO GET FREE INFORMATION BY CALLING THE MANUFACTURER AND ASKING THEM. ALL YOU WILL NEED TO TELL THEM IS THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BUYING THE VEHICLE GIVE THEN THE VIN AND THEY WILL PULL EVERYTHING THAT THEY HAVE ON FILE THAT HAS BEEN REPORTED.

ALSO REMEMBER THAT IF THE VEHICLE IS ANYWHERE NEAR A COASTLINE HAVE IT INSPECTED FOR FLOODING, I HAVE SEEN TOO MANY OF THESE VEHICLE GET PASS INSPECTION BECAUSE THEY WERE CLEANED UP VERY GOOD AND THE CUSTOMER GOT THE RAW END OF THE DEAL.

You can buy a NEW one for this much money. Don't go for it.
