I'm planning to get married, but Im not planning to have kids any time soon. How will my financial aid be affected? Will I still be able to qualify? We both work, and our income is about $23,000 each....please help!

I have a friend who got married and was still able to recieve financial aid no problem, and I know she is getting a pretty good amount. The only thing is that I don't know how much the two of them make approx. a year. But it has to be similar to what you make since her husband has a PHd and a good job and she works in a hospital. Also they do not have kids. There is no harm in applying for it though, who knows you may be surprised.

Your financial aid could be affected many different ways by getting married. It all depends. Examples:

If, before getting married, you were a dependent student who had a low EFC because your parents didn't make much money then getting married will likely qualify you for less financial aid. If you were a dependent student whose parents made enough money that you didn't qualify for grants to begin with, getting married probably won't really make a big difference.

If you were already an independent student before getting married, then with your income and no children you probably weren't getting any grants to begin with. Getting married will add income to your household (raising your EFC) but also adds another person to your household (lowering your EFC). Overall in this situation your EFC will probably be a bit higher if you get married, but you were probably only loan eligible to begin with.

My advise is this: With your income being what it is, I don't think you are getting grants. But, if you are eligible for grants now without being married I would wait to get married until after you've filed the FAFSA for 08-09.
If you are only loan eligible now without being married, it won't really matter when you get married. You will still be loan eligible. With your incomes, getting married will likely not make you eligible for grants.

Put all the info into your FASFA and see what comes out.
