I Need someone who IS a Vetrinarian, not someone who thinks thay know what to do and not some 12 year old pretending to be one and there not.. My cat just recently ran away, she was gon for three days and then came back, I found her this morning and the end of her tail (about the last three inches) has been cutoff, all of the skin and fur is gone, it is left with nothing except the small bone. She is not acting like she is in any pain, and she will let me touch it to clean it off, but I d not know, what to do. Does she need to be taken in and have this piece of bone removed? or will the skin and fur grow back? what do I do? I dont want it to get infected, and I dont want her to get something that cant be fixed. HELP, I have a myspace, and you can look on it at the pictures of her tail, my e-mail is lilbeardog91@hotmail.com, Please help me!!

What I don't think anybody has pointed out yet is the vertebrae that comprise a cat's tail are directly associated with the spine and the spinal cord. With exposed vertebrae, she runs a very high risk of infection of the spinal cord, which could paralyze and eventually kill her.

If you are unable to see a veterinarian (which of course you should find a way if at all possible) you need to keep her indoors. Get an E-collar ('cone' or 'lamp shade') from your local pet store and do not allow your cat to lick the tail end.

Get a razor and shave the hair at the end of the tail so there is about 1" of hairless skin at the end. Take a warm, dilute solution of organic iodine (NOT iodine tincture - iodine diluted in isopropyl alcohol, this will burn like crazy and damage the tissue) and gently scrub any scabs or necrotic tissue away from the wound. Twice daily dip the tail end in the organic iodine and let it soak for about 20 seconds.

DO NOT WRAP THE TAIL - any bacteria that are present will be locked in and you'll make her condition worse. Leave it open to the air to heal as quickly as possible.

Monitor her temperature rectally (buy a digital thermometer and some petroleum jelly from the pharmacy) and if she sustains a fever of 104 or higher you are up a creek, my friend, because the infection has already begun, and the only thing that can stop it is amputation of the tail and antibiotics.

If her temperature remains normal, keep the area as sterile as possible and her mouth away from it, and you MAY be able to avert disaster.

you probably wont get any vets to answer you on here, but I am an adult and a cat owner...once i accidently shut my cat's tail in the door of the bathroom I took off about an inch and a half off it bled and I actually saw the part that fell off...I felt so guilty so what i did was clean it with hydrogen peroxide and when that dried I put neosporin on faithfully until the bloody part healed...if your family isnt going to take her to the vet and you dont have money anyways I would just do this if she doesnt seem to be in pain and will let you do this it is about the best thing you can possibly do good luck

I agree. You need to take her to a realy vet. Do you honestly believe that if somebody says they are a vet online that they are telling the truth. You cannot be 100% positive. That is a serious injury that needs to be attended to at a vet clinic.

I am not a vet but this is a common sense question. Of course, she needs medical attention. Is she an indoor cat and just escaped or do you let her outdoors? I'm not completely sure of your situation but I strongly promote keeping cats strictly indoors for their safety.

She *does* need to be seen by a vet. Take her to an animal emergency clinic in your area, and tell them that you can't afford to pay. Most of them will treat her anyway.

She probably caught her tail in a radiator fan of a car. She will need to go to a vet no exceptions!!!

CALL A REAL VETERINARIAN. Your cat probably needs antibiotics and probably stitches, too. She needs to be seen IN PERSON by a vet.
