If your taking a train DO NOT take the Path. The path takes around 30-45 min depending on the time of day. NJ Transit (at Penn station) has trains and Newark is the second, sometimes first stop if express train. NJ transit only takes 15-20 min.

East side of the Hudson River is Manhattan, west side of the Hudson River is Newark, NJ. Maybe a mile as the crow flies.

I believe that it is about 9 miles but takes about 20 -30 minutes to drive it due to the traffic.
