I think a more illuminating question would be, "Christians, was it the issue of heaven/hell that made you a Christian?" I think you'll find the answer is overwhelmingly NO.
We become Christians because we experience the love of Christ in our lives. We find mercy in response to our imperfections. We find compassion in response to our lack of compassion. We find acceptance when perhaps we were unable to accept ourselves.
Christianity is about a relationship with Christ. It is something immensely personal and intimate. And that is what is ironic about all the attacks on Christianity in forums like this: the very core of what it means to be Christian is not visible from the outside.
The psalmist had a passionate love for God, even though he did not have a belief in heaven and hell. He experienced the love of God in his life, and he responded with love poetry. Likewise, Christians find that THIS life makes more sense with Christ than without him, apart from considerations of the next.

I assume the threat of hell is minimal and the promise of heaven is only somewhat more important to anyone who assumes the role of Christian. Living a Christ-like life isn't about religious belief at all. It is about having compassion and empathy for those in need and it is about showing kindness and love where ever possible.
None of the "goodness" ascribed to Christ and religion and belief in God are absent in non-believers. We all have the ability to think and feel and we all possess the same amount of these abilities - belief does not in the least way enhance our "good" senses.
God, Jesus and Allah are all pointless for embroidering something special into our abilities; they are merely fantasies that might cause us to become more aware of ourselves and others according to the good philosophies they teach. The trouble is... not all of religious teaching is good.
It's just as good, (and perhaps better,) to make ones decisions of how to treat a fellow man by following the dictates of ones reason according to the circumstances of any given situation. The religious versions of morality are stagnant and often inaccurate and mis-applied..

I'm not promised heaven, and I'm not threatened with hell, I am promised that I will live for ever, where I spend forever is up to my decisions that I make in this life. I have been where ever it is that you think you are, and to tell you the truth, there is nothing that I have given up in my walk with Christ, that I have in return not made up for 100 times over. What do you think that we give up, that will make you so miserable? drunkenness?, drugs, sex with anything that walks? I just don't know what you think we give up. I love a good glass of wine, I use drugs, when my back is about to kill me, I have medicines that help, that are used for what they were intended for, sex? there is no better sex than when it is with the one you love and will spend the rest of your life with.

No offense but this is a stupid question. You already know all these Christians are going to say "yes" so why would you ask it? It would be like asking people "If you didn't get payed to do your job but you knew you were benefiting humanity would you still come to work?" Most people would say yes. Would they? Probably not! You never see signs about there being too many volunteers!

They're not even Christian now. I've never met a Christian. I've met a bunch of drug addict, violent, cruel, unempathatic people who claim to believe in the message of Jesus. This is from a lifetime of experience in the Bible belt.
So no, considering it is painfully obvious they do not believe in what they say they do, I doubt they would even claim to if the risk and reward in the back of their mind was gone.

Well following Jesus is always a good idea, since he was a revolutionary who just wanted people to love each other, and heal and feed people.
