According to the bible, he was around at the time this was written.

John
4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

that verse says the "spirit of Antichrist." the verse explains what that means right before it, "every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God." the "ultimate" incarnation of the spirit of the Antichrist will be in the future tribulation with the literal Antichrist who will rule the world and declare himself God.

Yes, of course the antichrist has been here already. There have been several, and there will be more. Every generation endures an antichrist, as someone that spins the world on it's axis and performs unspeakable evil against mankind and against God. We've been through many apocalypses through the ages, and each time, humanity dusts it's feet off and moves forward with renewed strength.

Is old John talking about the "spirit" of the anti-christ in such a way as an idea or way of acting or does he literally mean the physical spirit of the anti-christ is on earth or does the anti-christ have to be in a human body----it's all so confusing!!!!

My plan is to be as good a person as I can and hopew for the best if the end times arrive.

I've been reading a lot of compelling arguments to why George Bush might be the anti-christ. But then I always thought it might have been Hitler too...I don't know. I guess we just have to be careful about who we follow.

By the way, in response to some answers above, the bible says that many Christians will be fooled into following the anti-Christ. The anti-Christ won't directly oppose Christ, quite the opposite.

(personally) i believe him to be here already...not in power, but alive and well...about my age...or so...in the east...ready to assume his role, being "groomed" for his position, and the stage of the world is being set...but the play has not begun...(we are talking about the actual person) now, the spirit of the anti-christ, did not, nor could not exhist untill there was a christ to "oppose" -to be against...and this spirit has been around for a long, long time deceiving the world and making "friends" against the Church and everything we have been here for since it's forming... to much information? "Peace!" :)
