HOW do I find my grandfather? James Mashburn.?

Question

My dad past when I was 6. James Mashburn (his dad) left when my dad was baby. My dad was born in 1941, died 1973. Rumor is James Mashburn is from the Birmingham Al area. (There are 100`s of them) How do I find out wich one is the right one. I am sure he is probably dead, but maybe, I can find some of his (and my) family. (His friends called him Jim)
