You need to take your cat to the vet as soon as possible. He may need cat anti-biotics and/or cat anti-inflammatory medication. If you just try to treat the injury yourself without professional advice and treatment it could become infected if it is not already, and cause further health problems.
Don't buy flea products from the shop as some of them are not safe and can cause serious health problems. (See www.hartzvictims.org) Ask your vet for Frontline - it is only available from the vet and is not in the shops. It is very effective and you will notice a difference immediately. Or you can ask the vet what he would recommend. He will probably recommend Frontline.
You should not use flea collars or any other product with Frontline but you will not need to - it is a really good product.

I assume he's on a proper flea treatment too?
The steroids are the pain relief. They've got anti inflammatory properties, so they will bring down the inflammation and crazy itching of the skin. You could put cream on the site, but the cat will only lick it off.
Getting rid of the fleas will solve the pain in the long term, because they're what's causing the pain. If you've had Frontline, Advantage, Revolution or Advocate put on him, the fleas will be gone within 24 hours.

Use Frontline! It is great! We've used it for years on our cats. Put some Pain Relief Neosporin on the area and try not to let the cat lick it off.

Why don't you just get rid of the fleas?
I used one little tube of Frontline & I haven't seen 1 living flea on my cat since.
I paid like $15 for 1 tube.
It works great.

You need to get rid of the fleas on your cat as well as the ones that you have in your house. fleas don't live on our pets they live in the environment, jump on to get a blood meal, mate and lay eggs. If the vet is giving you pred for the cat, you should be able to get what you need to deflea the cat and the house.
the cat will be easy, the house, not so.
This is a note to "sweetpartychick?" Cats and dogs can be allergic to fleas. Well, not to the fleas but to the fleas' saliva when they take a blood meal. It is similar to what happens to us when we get a mosquito bite.....every one reacts in a slightly different way.

First of all your cat doesn't have a flea allergy, he may have fleas, but not an allergic reaction to them. Your cat has what vets call a hot spot, which is a skin irritation that you can get rid of by simply bathing your cat. Here is an article on what a hot spot is and how to treat it. It's straight and to the point.

I have a 3yr female cat name oreo who had the same allergy. The vet gave her a shot of antihistamine and recommended as well to put the front-line drops on her coat. She has been doing great.
