An older friend of mine told me that his tip for success at the job is to not get involved in any Office Politics. He says he does not mix with his coworkers so he can avoid all office politics.

I thought about that advice for awhile and rejected it. I feel one has to mix both socially, culturally and organizationally to be part of the team. You also have to play office poltics if you want to compete with others in the office for raises, influence and promotions.

What do you think?

Mixing socially is fine but I agree with your friend about office politics. It's best to stay far away from it. You're not competing with co-workers for raises. You need to do you're job as well as you can, that's how you get a raise. I'm not saying you need to be a loner, you absolutely need to forge relationships with co-workers, but you should stay far away from cliques. If one person has a problem the entire group could then have a problem. You need to be an individual.

I mix organizationally with most of my co-workers. I mix socially with only a couple of them because we get along well and we trust each other. Most of my co-workers are nice people, but, there are always "those" people who you just want to keep a good distance from.

NO! I stay out of office politics. I'd rather be judged on the quality of my work rather than how well I kiss the bosses @$$. Any boss who rates me on how well I kiss their @$$ doesn't deserve me as their employee.
