Does it only refer to meat, or is there a specific manner in which to prepare all food?

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH MOST GRACIOUS MOST MERCIFUL....
no it isn't just for food...but while on the subject we are FORBIDDEN to eat a meat that had been dead before butchered...if we are unacknowledged of it then Allah SWT doesn't hold it against us...halal is is both the prep and it's blessing...the animal is to be taken alive at the head as the words "BismillAllah Arahmani Araheem"...this is the halal way.

now, as far as life goes it is either halal or harraam...of course u prob already know this...but there are levels of harraams...hugh ones, big ones, small ones and tiny ones...and Allah will judge us accordingly....anything halal is anything PROPERLY from the Sunnah of the RasulluAllah {Salla layhu alayhi wa salaam} followed WITHOUT inovations...this is halal when it comes to life in general...hope this is helpful...OH I FORGOT SOMETHING...idk if it is processed but kosher is most of the time halal {but this is too my knowledge...i'd get a second opinion on that.}

First off not a Muslim so ignore everything else if you want, but please give me some education, and I mean that with all my heart. I am very upset about this but if you can possible explain how any of this makes even the smallest amount of sense, then please explain it to me. I do not so much have an interest in the potato chip question, but the other question about the "illicit behavior" really bothers me. I was expecting to see a question that was something like she was cheating on her husband with an ex-boyfriend. I was completely shock when I found out that she was trying to help her ex when he was contemplating suicide. I understand that your religion says that married women should associate with other men, especially ex-boyfriends, but come on! Whether she knew him or not, the man needed help, she was asked to give it, and she stepped up to the plate. What’s more is that it worked. The guy is going to go seek help. There are many times that I look at Muslim values and can honestly say that I wish more people would adopt some of those values. But then something like this comes along and I am shocked. Maybe it is because I am a medic and have devoted a part of my life to helping people that I don't know, and that is what makes it impossible for me to wrap my head around what you are teaching here. But I can not honestly believe that a religion, that I am told preaches peace, that I truly believe can be practiced peacefully, would hold so hard and fast to it's rules that it would actually stop someone from saving a life. Regardless of spiritually differences, you truly have got to be joking if you believe that this is an appropriate way to behave. A few months ago my partner and I worked a car accident of a over turned vehicle in a ditch. The man in the car was a Muslim. His injuries were significant but not life threatening. Me and my other female partner treated and cared for him. When we had eased some of his pain he asked me if my husband liked me doing this type of work. I told him that he worries sometimes but that he is proud of me for helping people. He then said that he was glad I was there and thanked me for helping him. Now maybe there is some happy medium between being a Muslim and helping people, but not according to this question. So please, if you really believe that the whole world is going to be Muslim one day, you might want keep a few infidels or khufars around. After all accidents will still happen, and someone will have to be firefighters, police officers, and paramedics. If being Muslim means that you can’t help anyone out because it is an “illicit relationship” you will need a few people that actually give a rats @ss about other people.

Halal means permissible. It does not refer only to food. It refers to anything that we are allowed to eat, drink or do in life.
For food to be considered permissible it must be slaughtered by a Muslim who knows how to properly slaughter. Before the knife cuts the person says bismillah (in the name of Allah), the throat is cut but NOT the spine. The animal bleeds out and is butchered.
It has been proven that animals slaughter in the Islamic or Jewish way are healthier for human consumption because of the way they bleed out.

God has forbidden in Quran to eat meat of an animal that has been sacrified in the name of some god other than the God Allmighty. In India and in Arabia people worshipped idols and used to kill animal in their names. God forbids to eat such a meat.

Halal (permitted) is meat of animal that is sacrified calling the name of God in the process of sacrifying the animal. In Muslim way throat and blood veins are cut and not the spinal cord in the back so animal's heart continue pumping and all its blood is drained. Blood of an animal carry all germs or bacterias if the animal is sick. By Sacrifiying the animal this way, its meat is safer to eat.

Also for the health of humans God forbids to drink blood of any animal and to eat pig, dog, cat and all animals and birds that eat other dead or alive animals . But God has allowed to eat fish even though it eats smaller fishes.

God know best what is good for us and what is harmfulfor our health.

The halaal label is only used for animals that have been slaughtered with two conditions met:

1. name of Allaah is mentioned during slaughtering

2. the animal (plant) fits the requirements of the laws.

Everything else is halaal by default if its not against the law: for example fish, (and i do mean fish and not sea mammals) are halaal by default.

Either Allah (SWT) says so in the Qur'an or the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) says so in the sunnah of the Prophet.

After this, scholars get involved for things not covered (drugs, cigarettes et al).
