(All else being the same.) Since the 1080i is not progressive, I'm figuring the 720p will be a better display option for progressive scan DVD. Are there any advantages for 1080i over 720p when viewing DVD?

So, let me see if I got this right. In displaying a progressive scan DVD (480p), it is difficult to determine if a 720p display will give you a better picture because it is progressive or 1080i will give you a better picture because there is more line doubling, and thus it is video processor dependent, not to mention other factors such as other TV characteristics and viewing distance?

well it depends on your tvs native resolution. if you dont have a 1080p tv then your tv is probably a 720p set. yes these sets can accept a 1080i signal, it just downconverts it to your tvs native resolution(720p), and there are no 1080i tvs. 1080i resolution is the same as 1080p. one is just progressive scan and one is interlaced, progressive scan making a full picture frame every 60th of a second and interlaced making a full picture frame every 30th.there is not much difference to the eye except in fast moving objects or any moving objects for that matter, but our eyes dont notice much unless it is a large screen usually over 50". but any way. any signal that is sent to a tv . the tv will convert it to its naitive resolution. but yes progressive scan to prgressive scan takes less converting than progressive scan to interlaced. but this only really matters in instences like if you have a upconverting dvd player that ouputs hd resolution from regular dvds. it takes less processing if you set the output of the dvd player to 720p rather than 1080i. if you have a 720p tv. the dvd player processes the signal to 720p then sent to your tv wich has a 720p resolution so you tv has to do less processing or converting. than if you set the output of the dvd player to 1080i, it has to process the signal or convert it to 1080i then your 720p set has to convert that singal to 720p wich is the tvs native resolution. so thats double the precessing or converting. i mean there is minimal visual difference that we can see to our eyes. any way enough of my rambling. hoped i helped.

ok heres some more. i believe as well that a 1080i signal looks better on a 720p set than a 720p signal. the 1080i signal is sending more detail yes some of that detail is lost in the convertin it to 720p that the tv does, but some gets through. i notice this when playing my 360. i have it set to 1080i even though i have a 720p set. the only exceptions is when im playing fast moving games, like racing games. in racing games i notice more jagged lines and jagged ness. so i set them games at 720p when i play them and no problem. wow this is getting long so im out.

1080i is 1080 resolution whether the refresh is interlace or progressive and therefore the picture has higher resolution or detail. Supposedly 720p handles fast action sport broadcasts better, and ESPN hd is using 720p. I don't buy it - 1080i football games look way better to me. When viewing standard dvd, output in 480i or p with no upconvert, then 1080 will not be better or worse than 720 - it's only 480. So my answer is a 1080p tv can output anything including 720p and looks just as good doing it, but 1080i output (from hd cable for example) is sharper and better than 720p - even for fast action in my opinion (but apparently not ESPN's).

1080i is extra positive placing. it really is no longer the cable. I absolutely have heard of this challenge before. confer with someone from LG. be sure your television is 1080p. a television will be HDTV without being 1080p basically bear in options that! yet 1080p is the great. notwithstanding for t.v's 40 2" and below 1080p is hard to word through the human eye in spite of the reality that that is technically extra positive. Plus continuously get a house theater receiver that has the flow-via hdmi characteristic that way it doesn't muddle the widely used of the 1080p. I absolutely have considered this characteristic contained in the hot Yamaha receivers, even the low-cost one's. Peace,

most 720p TVs do 1080i, and yes progrssive is better that is why 1080p tvs are far more expensive, 1080i is cheap the only advantage
