RE:
Side Items with Shepherds Pie????
What side item would go well with shepherds pie? I am making it for dinner tonight and can't figure out if I should even have a side. I have never made it before any good tips?

I haven't ever added a side to my Pie, but I am considering a spinach salad with Granny Smith apples, golden raisins and dried cranberries, with a great dressing. Yup, that is exactly what I plan to serve with, of course, some heated crusty LaBrea bread....yum!

Shepherd's Pie has the protein, veggies, and carbs of a complete meal. You don't need anything technically.
You can go with something like a crusty loaf of french bread, or something else from the bakery like rye or sourdough...at my house we call it the fancy bread.
A green salad gives some crunch to the meal.
Don't forget dessert. Something LIGHT and cold like sorbet or sherbet would be a nice balance to this dish.

I think peas and julienne carrots ( stick shape) The trick with shepherd's pie is to have a lovely rich gravy with your mince, I think Bisto beef is good. When you have added your mas, creamed very well, with added butter not margerine and a little milk, you can brown the top in the oven and make it crispy, enjoy!!!

Try a nice fresh Field greens salad with your dressing of choice( vinaigrette preferably). Add a whole grain bread toasted with garlic butter and cheese to round things off.

I love love love sheppards pie. However, I don't usually have a side dish with it. I have in the past, made dinner rolls with it (my kids love rolls w/ butter) so theres a good idea. On the other hand depending on the size of your family, I think just the sheppards pie would be satisfying. :) it is for my family ;)
- you've got your 2 vegetables AND your meat all in one meal. :) good choice for dinner.

Will depend on on the context really. Which is better as a snack - fruits for me personally. It's tastier and gives you that little of sweetness. Which can be better as a snack if you are trying hard to slice back on sugar and lose weight vegetables
