Im Catholic and am considering having it done.(like most of my Catholic neighbors). I was told in school that each time you use condom is a sin. Im hoping a vasectomy is just one thus keeping my sin total to a minimum.

My wife and I are going to use birth control regardless.

Another question. Why is it OK to use natural methods of birth control (that always seem to fail in the long run) if the purpose of sex is procreation?" Shouldn't any form of birth control be sinful?

I wish you wouldn't make a joke of this.
To be fair - try to understand the Church's teaching about contraception.
Contraception is wrong because it’s a deliberate violation of the design God built into the human race, often referred to as "natural law." The natural law purpose of sex is procreation. The pleasure that sexual intercourse provides is an additional blessing from God, intended to offer the possibility of new life while strengthening the bond of intimacy, respect, and love between husband and wife. The loving environment this bond creates is the perfect setting for nurturing children.
But sexual pleasure within marriage becomes unnatural, and even harmful to the spouses, when it is used in a way that deliberately excludes the basic purpose of sex, which is procreation.
I hope you will reconsider, or at least take the time to truly reflect on what the Catechism says, and pray very hard. When you know something is wrong and do it anyway, you are putting yourself at emnity with God.

It is a mortal sin and you shouldn't do it.
If you do, then you should not receive the Eucharist because you are purposefully choosing to go against God.
Just because others are doing it does not make it okay, not to mention it will ultimately be bad for your marriage. I assume you are contraception now, but if you have licit reasons for not wanting children you can use NFP (natural family planning) to know when to abstain from sex. This is not contraceptive and is open to the will of God.
Our sexuality within marriage is an expression of our love and openness to our spouse and to God. You invited God to your wedding but by contraception you are telling him not to come. By being open to life, you are sharing yourselves completely with each other and with God. You are fully open to his will.
Do not put the physical pleasure of sex before your love for God. This will undermine your marriage and your relationship with God. Understand that if you choose to have a vasectomy you are choosing to put yourself out of the grace of God.
Read Humane Vitae. It is beautiful and shows the love the Church has for the people of God. The Church has a responsibility to show the faithful the way. Telling us that contraception/sterilization is wrong is not a rule of the Church but of God. The Church cannot change this only inform us of the truth. http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/paul_vi/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-vi_enc_25071968_humanae-vitae_en.html

I couldn't agree more with Veritas. You must understand the theology of the body to have any idea what you would be doing. A true understanding of such willl make it abundantly clear why you should never get a vasectomy. As to the degree of the sin, I think we can leave that to God.

You are correct.
The Church has always maintained the historic Christian teaching that deliberate acts of contraception are always gravely sinful, which means that it is mortally sinful if done with full knowledge and deliberate consent (CCC 1857). This teaching cannot be changed and has been taught by the Church infallibly.
There is no way to deny the fact that the Church has always and everywhere condemned artificial contraception and sterilization.
You may think you are following your conscience, but in fact, you are simply being disobedient.

Yes, you learned the truth at school. Contraception, whether with condoms or sterilization, is a very grave sin.
God’s gift of the sexuality, along with its pleasure and intimacy, must NOT be abused by deliberately frustrating the natural purpose - which is procreative.

None if you are not Catholic. They just want more paying members. That is the financial force that powers the Church.
If you become a Buddhist, no such pressure exists. We have no Heaven, no Hell, no guilt, and nobody is keeping score. Also we are not required to have children. If we do, we are not required to teach them Buddhism.

VASECTOMY Surgical excision of part of the ducts carrying sperm cells to ejaculation, with the purpose of causing sterilization. If the direct intent of the surger is to induce sterility, the operation is morally illicit.

I hope you have thought it over very carefully. I hope that a few years down the road you won't want a child. Are you married? Do you already have kids? Are you sure you won't want any more? Is your wife/girlfriend in agreement with the procedure? It is not a sin to get a vasectomy. In fact, you should be considered for sainthood. We "fix" our pets so they don't reproduce, so why not ourselves if we are finished? No sin.

well, think of it this way. killing someone is a sin, and so is using a condom, but are they equal sins? personally, i don't think anything is a sin unless it defies HUMAN laws. if god didn't want me to have sex with a condom he would have stopped me...
