I would suggest keeping his room clean and maybe making up his bed. Do you have pets? You could have him be responsible for making sure the pet has food and water. And I think dusting could be a good idea unless you have alot of breakables.

Taking out the trash
Unloading (or loading) the dishwasher
Running the vacuum
Setting the table for dinner
Cleaning his room
Wiping the kitchen and bathroom counter-tops
Raking leaves in the fall
Clearing the sidewalk to the front door in the winter
Washing the car in the summer
Of course, you probably don't want to pile all of this up on him, but you could have a chore or two each day and vary them from time to time or as he gets older. I don't even think it is unreasonable to begin teaching him to cook and do his own laundry (with supervision for a little while).
Hope this helps! It's good to see a parent interested in teaching a son how to take care of a household!

My 9 year olds vaccuum, load the dishwasher, load the washer and dryer, help wash the cars and mow the lawn. We tell them how much we appreciate the help and thank them and they feel proud to help. One of them also washes down the kitchen counters for me and brings the trash in from the bathrooms and puts it out. They also put away the groceries when we get home.
I don't make them do all that; they choose to do it. They each have a required chore and the rest they do if they want to. We're not slave drivers, but those two are indispensible!

Taking out the trash/recycling. Feeding the dogs (if you have them). Picking up trash in the yard. Making his bed and picking up his room. Clearing his dishes from the table after meals. Those are my son's main chores. He's 11 now and has been doing these things (or supposed to be doing them) since he was about 7.

I have three kids in this age range (7-11) and they are all quite capable of undertaking the following: keeping their rooms tidy, dusting, vacuuming, sorting laundry, helping me to wash dishes, take out recycling, snow shoveling, raking leaves, helping with menus and grocery shopping, peeling vegetables, scrub bathtub, make their own beds.
In addition, they are all learning how to cook, sew (by hand and machine), and knit.
We also talk, in general terms, about family budgeting and saving and spending decisions.

At that age it is probably best to keep it simple. I would suggest keeping his room clean, and in general coach him on cleaning up after himself. Have him rinse his own dishes and put them in the sink or dishwasher. Designate a place for him to put his dirty clothes when he is done with them. One less mess made is one less you have to clean up later.
